It used to be the case, in some European Countries, and certainly in France, that waiters worked purely for the 'tips'. I don't think this is still the case, as most bills contain a 'service' element.
I stopped off for a coffee at a bar in Italy and gave a one euro coin in payment the barrista left a 20 cent coin on the saucer and I, quite happily, eft it as the 'tip'. As I was leaving he followed me, with the coin, and told me I had 'forgotten my change'. I told him it was intended as the 'tip' and he explained that, other than at motorway service areas and 'tourist traps', tipping was definitely not expected in Italy. I was pleasantly surprised.

I tipped £4 yesterday to my hairdresser.
It was £96 so I gave her £100 and left the change for her :)

Fair enough, sp. Mind you, your 'tip' alone would have paid for one of my haircuts. :rotfl: :rotfl:
