To Tip Or Not To Tip

I usually tip if I have had good service. I begrudge leaving a tip in the local carvery, mainly cos I feel the waitresses don't actually do that much. I have to queue and carry my plate back to my seat... but then again, maybe it is split with the chefs and kitchen staff who work their socks off... food for thought
I do usually tip taxi drivers, mainly cos the journey I do costs £4.20 and I give them a fiver and tell them to keep the change.
My hairdresser is a friend and she does my hair on her day off, so I usually tip her too. She is a diamond and I trust her totally with my hair, having experienced a few dodgy hairdressers. She is worth the tip!Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.0 -
My brother is a barber and he always cuts my hair for me, and although he doesnt charge, I drop £5 in his bank account so he cant complain. As an ICT Technician, I fix his PC for him when he has problems, and my neighbours usually give me £10 for lookin at the PC's.

I hate talking tips.
I serve the public 42 hours a week and do not get tipped for it. More often than not i face verbal abuse and raised voices both face to face and in person.
I alway tip taxi drivers unless they don't talk to me or are cheeky when i'm drunk.
I never tip my local salon as their prices are too expensive but I tip my new hairdresser who works from home and does a full head highlights, cut and blowdry for £25. I always leave her £30 all in.
Unfortunatly since getting into debt I haven't had the privilege of dining out but I try to leave 10% of the bill.Official DFW nerd no 551 - proud to be dealing with my debts

Most hairdressers don't make that much money, and kind of rely on their tips.
i understand what you are saying but at the end of the day if the job isnt going to give them enough money to live on without relying in tips maybe they should get another job ...my job certainly isnt well paid no-one tips me i accept that and choose to remain working in the field that i do ....that is my choice i certainly wouldnt expect someone to tip me just because i dont earn much0 -

I am totally with you on this one. We are not allowed to accept tips as it is not company policy  But to be honest we are lucky to get a civil word out of some of the customers!LBM 14/12/06 £21,947.17 DEBT FREE 12/04/09

Blimey - tipping is quite an emotive subject isn't it?
Funnily enough I had the same dilema at the hairdressers yesterday. I have to say I do usually tip but yesterday i had only the exact amount of money for the haircut in my purse (coincidently - i didn't plan it) so consequently couldn't leave a tip and felt a bit guilty, but I will tip her a bit extra next time. I could have used my debit card and used some cash to tip her, but then I knew i would end up squandering the cash in my purse on needless things, so in a DFW way decided I would use my cash and forgo the tip.
Just be grateful that tipping is decretionary in this country. When we went to Toronto a few years ago, we went to quite a posh resturant and when the bill came we paid with a card (yes I know!)and didn't have a lot of cash left and needed to get a cab back to hotel, so we left a fairly modest tip, thinking in a very British way, that something is better than nothing. Our waiter however, was FAR from happy. He collected our coats and shoved them at my OH (We had watched him previously help the ladies on with their coats) and he said "you won';t get far in this town with tips like that!" and virtually pushed us out into the street! We laugh now but were mortified at the time!:rotfl:0 -
Reminds me a little of when we went to Cyprus a few years ago. We were walking down the street & were roped into going into this posh restuarant by the waiters standing outside. We sat down for a meal & they brought out a basket of bread. Thinking this was complimentary we of course ate it. When the bill came they charged us the equivalent to about a fiver for the bread! Needless to say we didn't leave a tip & spent the rest of the hols eating t the English themed pub across the road from hotel, which was cheaper & nicer! Another time when I went on my mate's stag weekend in Newcastle we ate at an Indian Restuarant. They added a 10% service charge to our meals which was fine. The bill came to around £191 & one of the lads gave the waiter £200. They thought we were going to leave without collecting the change but a service charge & tip,no way! My mate went up & collected the change & they weren't happy at all!Debt at LBM(July 1st 07)-£35,053.92 Debt on 1st Anniversary of LBM(July 1st 08)-£33,170.11 (31st January 09)-£32,318.73Paid off so far £2,735.19(7.8%) Average paid off p.m. £143.95 L/H supporter 115 DFD target February 2018 DFD March 2028. I feel embarassed to tip and guilty not to! Occasionally I will, but can never afford more than £1 and that seems to tight these days - plus in most salons the stylists wear more expensive clothes, lovely nails and makeup than I could ever afford - not a judgement just an observation (before the linching starts!).I stopped smoking 25th June 2007STILL Never complacent but confidentMy debt is GOING DOWN!!!!0
