Opening the jars to taste wont allow the food to last for more than a couple of days, and im not keen on putting glass jars in the main luggage incase they break.

Oh well, Im going to have to hope that one of the shops once we have passed check in have the flavours I require!

Packed well they will be absolutely fine, wrapped well in plastic and set amongst soft items, i often pack a bottle of red wine in my luggage to enjoy on arrival, so far without disaster.

Arrive early and ask before you check your bag in, then you will have the opportunity to pack any excess and lose the risk of loosing them altogether, different airports do have different levels of stringency.

    Good luck

    Xmas Saver!
I did this yesterday - used heinz cans and the plastic cartons of fruit purees for my 7 month old. We had to open one and feed it to him in front of them, the other containers were swabbed and they let us take them on plane as long as it was a reasonable amount for the flight.

Another option might be to take powdered food and add boiled water - would cut down on weight a little.

You could pack powdered food in with your clothes too so you have food when you get out there.

Put the jars in socks and pack other clothes round them, or buy food in cans. We bring back bottles of booze in our cases and have never had one break.

Same here, I always bring back 2 bottles of Vodka for my neighbour using the " sock " method, never had any break.

    How old is the baby?

My boys were 10 months and 7 months on their first holidays and my daughter will be a year old when we travel next month.

I only took a few jars for convenience with the boys (like out on a day trip etc) and the rest of the time, I was always able to find a dish that could be mushed with a fork for them. They seemed to enjoy tasting the local dishes. I'm only planning on taking a few bits for my daughter and hopefully she'll eat the local food while we are away.

If you still want to take jars, wrap them in bubble wrap. It weighs hardly anything and it's useful if you want to bring bottles of drink or ceramic items back.
Here I go again on my own....
  • When we flew from Manchester I took 2 jars of food on the plane with us, I had to open both jars and taste them.

I also took jars in the hold luggage wrapped in the towels and they were fine.

Slightly off topic, but some airlines carry baby food (limited) on flights 6 hours plus (long haul only) no one ever asks for it and I cant remember the last time i got asked to warm some ( i work for an airline) that is why I'm a little vague on the security rules exemptions.
So as a long shot if you come unprepared or have them taken off you ask the crew on boarding, though we carry upto 20 infants and only 4 jars of baby food, but as i say, they are not advertised as available so never ever used, ( they are free of charge) we also carry a few nappies too, also never used!
