    I personally wouldn't recommend mac.

Not doubting they're good, but through uni depending on the course you may need certain programs and applications supported by windows which has easy sync. Its best to stick here.

Most uni's will run important software like MAPLE, MATHEMATICA or any other course related software through UNIX servers, which you can access from windows OR mac's, (in fact its easiser on a mac, trust me!) so compatability isnt too much of an issue.

your doing accounting? YOu'll prob need a spreadsheet software package, you can get Microsoft office for mac at student discount (https://www.ebuyer.com is the cheapest)

The cheapest way to buy an apple mac might be to wait until you get (back?) to uni as sometimes if your uni has an agreement with Apple you can get an even bigger discount if u access the store through the campus network (ie with a uni IP address)

    However...

If you are set on getting a windows based PC then there are student discounts out there but there not always advertised. DELL DO A STUDENT DISCOUNT, but you either have to email them first or better still call them up and twist their arm. You will probably need proof of student status either with an NUS number or student status letter from your uni.

Dell arnt the only computer manufacture to offer student discounts. Call around and find out.

Another option could be the retailers you see in computer magazines like computer warehouse or dabs.com etc phone them and see what they offer to student

You can understand why they don't advertise their student offers!!

    Good luck

PS - I've got a mac and do maths and have had no trouble with software, but then i've never been a game player and i am starting to get frustrated with the appleworks office package included, i need to get Microsoft office, https://www.ebuyer.com like i said...

The one Aldi was selling last week would have been perfect, shame i didn't get my results by then...
    Oh Ye Of Little Faith!

You should have snapped it up anyway, not opened it when you got it home, then taken it back if you'd failed miserably ... or kept it in the hope you'd get somewhere through clearing ... or kept it because it would be useful for job-hunting ...

  • Personally speaking Mac is suitable for most people.

I do a business course and find the mac to be much more reliable and am still able to run microsoft office to have the same features as my peers with windows.

In addition, if you want the best of both worlds then purchase virtual pc for the mac.

Therefore you can have the mac stability and reputation with the ability to use your windows programs.

    Something definately worth considering...
  • yeh, thanks for your help guys, so far these 3 computers seem quite alright on

:j Go for a PC, unless you're going to do vid editing, or creative stuff.

Although the mac user interface is more pleasent, and best for creative demanding apps. then go for a regular PC. Try https://www.dell.co.uk or https://www.ebuyer.co.uk
  • im a student doing accounting and economics, going into second year.. i recommend getting a laptop.. saves so much time doing notes in lect/tutorials instead of typing up when getting home... and its much more easier to take with u, like when visiting home, instead of taking ur whole pc... i had a pc for first year now im looking at investing into a laptop :)

good luck with your studies.. and to let you no that your not in for any suprises.. first year of accounting, is really easyand fun :)

    Hi,

I run some practical classes at my uni. In my opinion your best bet is a PC running both windows and linux. This covers most options.

Macs are good, but are more expensive (not good for money saving). I bet that 99% of your student clusters will be either windows or linux . Also windows is your best bet for games.

    Hope this helps,

    Olly

  • The new generation of Macs run windows (using Parallels virtualisation).

I am addicted to Macs after using Windows all my life

If you live in London, head on down to the Big Apple store for a demo.

Students get a hefty 10% discount

Windows pcs are cheaper intially, but Macs have built in virus protection (i.e. there are no viruses on the mac)

Also, I bought at £1800 Sony laptop, i Needed cash quick so I sold it on eBay for £450 - buyer collected in person. Sweet.

    Hey.

Recently there have been 3 or 4 Trojans that have come out and effected Mac computers. These are a lot more dangerous as its not like you can download a quick patch to fix it! Its usually a core problem.

Saying that Mac's are more secure yes. But a LOT more expensive. I would not recommend a Mac to a student. Pc's are cheaper and so long as you know vaguely what you're doing, easy to use and does the job!

The only trojans are proof-of-concept ones - they are not in the wild, and Mac OS X auto-updates all the time.

I bought a laptop using a MasterCard. I went for this:
