I'm glad you posted this question, as DS has just mentioned he wouldn't mind having one for the same reason....... He'll be paying of course - yeah right! but we might help him out, cos I'm soft :o
Let's hope for lots of good suggestions! (I know next to nothing about computers so I'm relying on the helpful MSEs :A )

  • The best deal for students by far is from Apple.

Basically Apple provide all students with huge educational discounts making some computers much less than £500.

At the moment they have a fantasic offer on where when you buy a computer you can get an Ipod for as little as £100ish (not too sure on exact figure).

Basically if you go to https://www.apple.com/uk and select the store the offers will be there.

I'm at university and have been able to take advantage of the offer and moving from Windows to the AppleMac system was the best technology move I ever made.

Please do not be put off by windows being more popular, Mac is definately as good and for us students works out much cheaper and looks so much cooler than a boaring PC.

Hope this helps! ( And I am not affilated with mac before anyone asks, I just love the student deal I got, it was a bargain!!).
  • thanks dg marsen but i only want windows as i don't really like using macs though they do look cooler!

anyway bennifred, so far i've been looking on http://computing.kelkoo.co.uk/b/a/c_111801_computers_desktops.html

as it has some good results but not good enough........

Although Dell don't offer student discounts, you can't go wrong with the deals that they are always offering. There are bound to be a few posts over in the Shop But Don't Drop and Grabbit Quick boards (Sorry, I haven't posted any links for the threads here, but a quick look over in those boards will bring some results up I'm sure).

Also, have a look at https://www.ebuyer.com. They often have some good deals on computers in the PCs & Displays section of their site.

I don't know of anyone offering student discounts on computers otherwise, but with these 2 offering good deals, you'd be hard pushed to get a discount anyway! :)

    Hope that helps!

    I personally wouldn't recommend mac.

Not doubting they're good, but through uni depending on the course you may need certain programs and applications supported by windows which has easy sync. Its best to stick here.

There are good student deals on laptops and pc's through your university! So I'd suggest you speak to them about it as well!!!!

    Good luck

"best deal for students is by far from apple"...ok so they offer a "student deal" i admit but they are still expensive to begin with! for £500 you can either build yourself a fairly decent however a "tft and fairly decent graphics card" is likely to set you back about half of your budget...worth checking out dells deals cause they always seem reasonable in my eyes.

    just my 2pence!

if you are a student doing a media course, design, film, animation, music etc etc etc, macs are often a much better platform as they offer far greater scope software wise, and are more often than not, the tools of the trade.

to say that windows is the be all and end all is a sweeping generalisation. for some students, it simply doesnt come up to parr and isnt suitable. choose what is right for you

    I agree :)

Was just generalising as for the average joe student, windows just might be better due to how well supported it is.

However yes, for graphics and media, Mac does have software specialised in that field which windows struggles to copy. :)

  • well i'm only studying accounting and finance so i won't need it that powerful, but i still wanna play games and stuff!

The one Aldi was selling last week would have been perfect, shame i didn't get my results by then...
  • Go for a pc if thats your requirements. Mac's appauling for its low range of game compatibility! :)

Plus even though Mac has good processing capablities.. a P4 2.8ghz or equivalent is sufficient processing for financial calculations of all kind :D

PC has my thumbs up :) And your University should provide special student prices. Otherwise buy a decent package from pc world :)
