Try the Rspca's insurance... you geta good discount by having an RSPCA dog and gothrough quidco for cash back :) That's who my dog is insured through... she's got the to be worlds most accident prone dog *DEEP sigh* - friday the dogwalker brough her back and after she had her paws washed down there was a tiny bit of blood on her paw... when I looked closer she had a flap of skin that was about a 10p piece size... so off tothe vets AGAIN and one sedation and 3 stitches and acourse of anti biotics later I now have to call the insurance company again tomorrow sothey can pay their share of the £156 bill :) hohum... I love her really LOL!
Directline have been very good with my cats to be honest - one has had over £1500 of claims after an accident and they were very nice and helpful :) SO the cats are still with Directline - I through quidco every year tho (not sure if they are still on quidco, hope so!) to get a slightly better deal :)

Tine, can you use quidco to pay for a renewal, or do you have to take out a new policy each year?

One thing my vet did say to me was to check that the policy would always be renewed of there's an ongoing illness. I'm with Petplan who are more expensive but if my dogs develop an ongoing illness there will be no change in my premuims and they will keep paying out for it each year.

    Hi Lynextte,
Im in the same predicament at the minute, petplan looks like the best out there but its soo expensive I keep putting it off, I have a pedigree lab who is now 8months old and I know how important it is but havent yet bit the bullet - does anyone know if there are any other covered for life policies like petplan that dont cost quite as much???

    Thanks

    Hi Zav,

I also have a pedigree lab who is now 3 1/2 yrs old. When I first got her I could not afford pet plan which was the insurance my vet surgery promote. When I had her chipped I got a leaflet about Animal Care insurance. They are still not the cheapest insurance by they do not have time -limits and offer a yearly total - £7000 (thats what it was then). I have always found them to be good and they were excellent when I made a small claim.

Get a quote from them and see

I am no longer with them, but this is purely because I got another dog and decided I could not afford such fab cover for both

I am now with tesco and have taken out their *extra* cover as it is currently 40% off.

I feel rotten that they do not have the type of cover I feel would be best but if I save up the difference in monthly premiums then I should be able to cover anything that the insurance does not.

Lynxette. You need to decide whether you want lifetime insurance or not. I'd vote "Yes", so you'd have to exclude Tescos, RSPCA etc.

If you do, M&S isn't very popular atm. PetPlan, NFU (phone only) & AXA are the ones often recommended (by pboae :) ). Not sure why Halifax won't quote online for you, but it's worth perservering as they are a lot cheaper than PetPlan. HSBC might be worth a look. Whatever you go for, you need to get it right first time as once you claim you're pretty much stuck with the insurer.

Lynxette. Try vets4pets for the vaccinations, if you have one near you, they do vacs for life which costs £70 & you never have to pay again as long as you take the dog back every year when their booster is due (if this lapses by 4 weeks you will have to pay again) They are also offering £10 boosters & £20 complete courses during April.

Insurance-I'm with M&S at the mo for both of mine as they were the cheapest at the time for the £7,000 cover but the premiums have gone up quite a lot as M&S have changed underwriters. Most of the people I know have changed to AXA as this is who M&S used to with but they now use Royal Sun Alliance.

    Hope that helps a little

Pet-insurance.co.uk is a scheme administered and underwritten by Equine & Livestock Insurance Co. Ltd.

Equine and Livestock is E&L, you'll be lucky to get £4 out of them, let alone £4,000
