Charged by Vodafone for Voice Mails while abroad

I was abroad for 2 months and left my phone on as I was using it as my morning alarm clock. There were several calls to my mobile but I did not pick them up to avoid any charges. However, when I got back to the UK, I realised that i was charged for those calls which were redirected to my voice mail. I had not even realised that I had any voice mail messages while I was abroad as there was no indication on my phone that I had any.

I rang up Vodafone and was told that I would still have to pay for those redirections to my voice mail for which I had no knowledge of. I felt really cheated for paying for services I had not even known existed! I will remember to cancel my voicemail redirection in future when I go abroad, esp since many callers just hang up when they reach voice mail and I still got charged for those few seconds! This is the first time I have ever experienced this in my 6 years with Vodafone!

Anyone had similar experiences? How about other networks?

  • I have just got my mobile bill and found that while I was in Florida for 2 weeks, for all unanswered calls I made to my daughter's mobile - she was in france at the time- I have been charged £1.25 plus vat, there are 15 in total.
    She has not got voicemail.
Vodaphone say this is correct that I still have to pay and it would be because I would get a message saying "this call can not be connected". The calls ranged from 10-50 seconds and I didn't even let it ring long enough most times to get a message.
There is no way I was aware I would be charged just for dialling a number, is this how it is for all providers?
To say I am angry is an understatement, I have three contract phones with Vodaphone who refuse to budge in any way and just kept telling me "well you dialled the numbers"

When I was in Italy lasy year I was charged for 44 one second calls made within about a ten minute period. We had some trouble with our tickets and I was trying to ring home but wasn't getting an answer. I am with O2 who thankfully cancelled the charges.
