Tesco Pine-nuts rip-off!!

If you go to Tesco to buy Pine nuts you can pay 1.89 for the 100g pack displayed near the fruit and veg and sold as a 'healthy snack' or you could choose to pay 1.45 for the 100g pack sold near the home baking ingredients!! I can't see any difference between the 2 apart from the price and the packaging.

Probably just the case that one of the price labels is wrong.0

In general, Tesco charge more for products in the healthy eating aisle than exactly the same stuff in a different packet in the baking aisle - eg dried fruit/nuts etc.

The £1.45 ones are pine nut kernals, £1.85 just says pine nuts, not sure if it makes a difference??? But sainsburys normal ones are £1.45 for 100gOur dream has come true...0

Tesco.com doesn't give a lot of information, but the nutritional information is different for the 2 different types so the product must be different. Will investigate next time I'm in Tesco (which conveniently will be in the next few minutes. Just as soon as I've looked up a recipe I can use pine nuts in...)0

I believe it is something to do with VAT.
The ones sold as healthy snacks are classed as luxury foods, and so are subject to VAT, making the price higher. Foods considered essential , such as the same nuts in the ingredients section, are zero rated.
So it's not a totally a Tesco ripoff, it's just compliance with bizarre VAT laws with (possibly) an element of taking advantage of the unaware or the impatient.
Just for your amusement (if you're a money geek)
McVities (maker of Jaffa Cakes) and HM Revenue and Customs went to a tribunal over whether Jaffa Cakes were a cake (zero rated VAT) or a chocolate biscuit (17.5% VAT). McVities won.Competition wins: Where's Wally Goody Bag, Club badge branded football, Nivea for Men Goody Bag0 -
