Chased For Outstanding 12 Year Debt

Hello folks
I'm hoping someone can give me some advice, I have been contacted today by an investigations company re an outstanding debt to a high street bank.
Allegedly, the debt is connected to an address I vacated in 1996, the investigations company who've tracked me down today state that the bank in question obtained a CCJ which was served at the address, (don't know when the CCJ was obtained) although I've had no notification of it as I have not lived at that address since 1996.
I recall having a current account with the bank during the 1990's but not sure of what took place on closing that account, 1996 was when I left the property having suffered my 1st nervous breakdown which resulted in a section under the mental health act, I never returned back to the property which the high street bank had listed.
My main question, how far can a lender go back for an outstanding debt, the debt in question is either an overdraft, or personal loan, neither of which are “secured” debts, it's 12 years since we left the property, and in total honesty with various issues going on in our lives this debt just seemed to have genuinely been forgotten about.
The investigations company said they will send me information on the relevant debt.
We are just in the progress of going through an IVA via CCCS, and for once felt at ease, now this unexpected issue has turned our life upside down again.
I hope the above makes sense, any advice will be most welcome.

After 6 years the debt is statute barred, this means you don’t have to pay it back nor do you have to acknowledge these Muppets who are trying to make a few quid, don’t phone, speak, write or email anybody because once you acknowledge the debt you might find that you have to pay it back, just destroy the letter and pretend it never happened.Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0

Hi Prolaint
I did call them, as the letter never acknowledged who or what it was about, that's how I found out about the debt.
However, I've just spoken to national debt line, who've reassured me on my legal obligations.
I feel much better now I know where I legally stand.
Many thanks for the help and advice.Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

Not if there's a CCJ already made.... it's still enforceable, although they may need to go back to court to enforce it.
I've had no problems obtaining any form or credit since 2003.Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

A CCJ will last for 6 years from the date it was issued. Get a copy of your credit report either from the Equifax or Experian website, you can pay online and view it immediately. It will show under court information. Fingers crossed you haven't got one. If you have had no problems getting credit in the last few years I would suggest you haven't been CCJ'd.0

Is there any information relating to to what you say Calibrax. I was looking forward to 2011 when my last CCJ will be wiped - are you saying I will still be penalised??0

No, that's wrong. A CCJ will only show on your credit file for six years - but legally as it is not subject to the 1980 Limitations Act, it can remain enforceable for long after that.Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

If it is proved you owe the money I think you should make every effort to pay it back. Personally I think you are looking for a way out of not meeting your obligations.
Its a bit like a film on tv I saw recently with Leonardo Decaprio called "Catch me if you can" and as with that character they have caught up with you.0 -
