    Hi JCD_Capulet,

Quite a few Old Stylers have enjoyed making these. I've added your post to the main rag rug thread to keep the information together.

  • Hi,

I started my first rag rug this week, using my ds's old pyjamas. I'm not making a braided rug like the youtube one, but a 'shaggy' type using a rag rug tool, that pushes the fabric through and grabs it to pull it back out. I've made a latch hook rug before with wool, but this is even easier, and seems to be quicker too.

I was looking at buying a rag cutter to speed things up even more but I've found it pretty straight forward to just use scissors.

I'm also cutting up old t-shirts to made a ball of rag 'wool' to try knitting another rug. You're supposed to crochet it, but I've never got to grips with crochet for some reason.

As the longer nights draw in, it seems to bring my crafting instincts to the fore. I thought I would give rag rugging a go this year: it is a cheap craft to do, and suitable for my somewhat clumsy hands.

    How's your rug going?

We used to make rag rugs using rug canvas and a latch hook (not technically meant for ragging) and it was really easy. The canvas is more expensive than hessian but doesnt fray around the edges. My mum had a craft market stall and always had us making something! .....infact I may just ask her if she still has the tools etc (she usually keeps everything bless!) and have a go again. found this site..

Quilting is taking squares or hexagons of many different cloths and making them into large sheets that can then be used as a quilt or duvet cover. Really inventive quilters make entire pictures out of different shapes.

A google on quilting shouldn't pull up more than, oh... a couple of million pages to show you what can be done :)

Hi hope you dont mind me clarifying it but using different materials is a patchwork quilt. Quilting is actually the fancy stitching that holds three thickness's of fabric [the outer, wadding, backing] together using a running stitch. This was traditionally done on a large frame the quilt was tacked on the pattern chalked out, than carefully hand stitched. type Durham quilt into google.

I've started a rug like this one today using old clothes that are too worn out to give to the charity shop

It's going quite well for a beginner!! The problem I'm having is that the the rug isn't flat and it's beginning to curl up like a bowl. Is it because I'm pulling the fabric too tight or maybe because I'm doing it on my knee? I don't expect it'll be perfect with it being my first one, but I would like to be able to use it without tripping over it!!

Hi, how do you make rag wool? And then use it to make a rug? I like this idea and haven't heard of it before:rolleyes:

I think this means taking long strips of fabric and knitting it as you would a ball of wool. I've seen instructions for cutting old tshirts etc up to get a long strip, I'll see if I can find it ;)

this site might be useful or this one

and I followed a link to etsy, rag knit bags
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Here's a couple of pics of the second rag rug I've made. I'd like it to be bigger than this but I've run out of scraps so I'll add to it as and when.
