There's several different types of rag rugging, prodding, hooking etc and you'll loads of information on the net - just google rag rugs, and see whats available.

this might be a good place to start - http://www.netw.com/~rafter4/rugtype.html

  • The easiest & cheapest way is to use a piece of hessian to whatever size you need, then cut up fabric scraps approx 4" long x 1" wide. You need a prodder basically a piece of wood a bit wider than a pencil that is shaped to a rounded point at one end and you simply get your fabric scrap poke the prodder through the one end of the fabric scrap through the hessian and then out the other side. You should end up with the two ends of the scrap on the same side. I hope that makes sense. I make them all the time, I think they're great and washable too!

    Hi cuddlymarm,

There's an older thread on making rag rugs that should help so I've merged your thread with it to keep all the suggestions together.

Love the idea of the wall hanging rather than on the floor

They look really impressive...............got no wall space for wall hangings......good reason to stop me having a go at one.............I'd get nothing else done.
I did have a go a few years back at doing a rug (saw it in some magazine) where strips of material were cut up, plaited and then sewn in a circle going round and round................my rug though ended up as a placemat for the middle of the table till the stitching came undone and I chucked it.

I was just wondering if anyone is making a rag rug in preperation for the winter? Although intended as a thrifty, recycled floor covering, I'm planning on making mine big enough to chuck on the bottom of the bed in winter. The extra weight will help keep my tootises warm, and the cats might even appreciate it too :)

I started making mine after finding this youtube video (there's a few of them by the same lady) so I thought I'd post it here for anyone who might want to give it a go :)
