Dry Fitting Kitchen Quote

Hello all,
I've got a few quotes in for a new kitchen plus installation now, and as seen so frequently though the MFI and B&Q quotes for the installation part have made my hair stand on end!!! I'm going to get a few independent fitter quotes and just got my first one in. I've been quoted £1200 for the following:
7 wall units
Base units (consists of end panels and support panels for integrated dishwasher, fridge, freezer, cooker plus a couple of cupboards)
Worktops
Sink
This quote is excluding any gas/electric work that needs doing.
I'm based in the W.Mids - does this sound about right??
Thanks for any assistance anyone can pass on.

How many base units?
How many worktops and are they in an L or U shape?
Is there fancy light pelmets and corniches?
Does that include both materials and labour for the sink - ie complete plumbing in?
Any extractor?
At the moment sounds just a tad expensive, but give us a bit more info.

Woody,
Thank you for your reply, sorry my details were a bit too brief but it hard to explain these things fully when you're not 100% sure!
Sorry if this appears a daft question, but would it be considered a base unit even if it was a space allocated for integrated appliances i.e. would consist of end panels and/or support panels, or would a base unit actually mean cupboard space for storage? As it stands anyway, I have a free standing washing machine that will be staying, then will be putting in slimline integrated dishwasher, sink unit with storage beneath, two drawerline cabinets that will fit either side of the built in oven housing and hob, then end/support panels to incorporate an integrated fridge and freezer.
The worktops will be in a U shape, there will be 3 tops in total (obviously including making the space for hob & sink).
There will be no other fancy add ons to the units.
I need to clarify with him if that includes sorting out the sink, but I'm pretty sure it does.
There will be an extractor which I will be venting to the outside of my house. Again, will need just to double check on whether this is inclusive of the quote.
Again, thanks for your help.0 -
Generally around here the cost is approx £45 per unit to fit. The unit is a physical carcass, not a space, but if you are having end panels in the spaces etc, then I usually charge the same as a unit for them as it can take as much if not more work to fit.
A U shaped worktop will encompass 2 cuts costing roughly £40 a cut and the cost of doing cut outs vary but I normally charge about £30 per cut out (ie for a sink, hob etc). Exepct to pay anything from £50 to £100 to fit the sink, and the extractor, well thats a bit trickier. If you want him to vent it outside and he has to hire the hole drill, transformer etc etc then probably about £80.
These prices do vary around the country and obviously each fitter has his own rates but this should be good enough to give you an idea. Don't forget for the worktop joints you will need connector bolts (6 @ £1.50 each) and probably Colorfill to seal the joints (£8).
So I'll hazard a guess here (having not actually seen the plans or the room) but I would charge about between £700 - £900 for that kitchen.
Hope this helps

Woody, you seem to be the man in the know:
New kitchen to have:
5 base units+unit for integrated oven
6 wall units
4.3m of worktop, 2 joints and 2 cut outs.
There will be plumbing/leccy bits, but have a few people to do them.
I will build the (IKEA) carcases, and remove the old one, so all the fitters need to do is level the units, fix them to wall, cut worktopss, fit handles and doors.
Tiling will again be done by a friend.
I was reckoning a days work for 2 guys @ £150 = £300.
Plus a bit extra for materials, and maybe some cover peices, £450 max.
North West based, so no daft southern prices, What do you think?0 -
Hi and thanks. Tricky one yours. You are right it should be about a day for 2 guys, but it will be the worktops that take the time here, and they will be a two handed job, so it may well be 2 days for two guys :-(. One thing people forget is just how long it can take to fit handles! Believe it or not they can be a right royal pain in the backside, so by the time the units are fitted, plinths fitted, wall units aligned, any corners sorted out, that could be the better part of the day gone.
The worktops take time, you HAVE to take it slowly and especially cutting out for the sink. Then you have to get them square into and sat nicely, which may involve sinking edges into the wall by a few mm. Once you've got that hole in it you lose all strength, so moving them is always a concern.
I would allow for 2 days, but you may find the daily labour cost is a bit cheaper as it may well be a chippie plus mate.
For anyone else also reading this, it would be nice feedback for us guys to know if we are generally about right with our prices we give you (On any of the work). It shows us, a) what the current going rates are - you can become isolated at times, b) how it varies around the country so others may benefit in their area too.

Thanks for your help Woody, will get a few more quotes and will post back to see if there is a lot of variation in prices.0

OK, an update. Kitchen is actually 7 wall units (forgot the one above the extractor), 6 base units (forgot integrated dishwasher).
Leccy is nothing major, but plumbing is moving sink from on side of the kitchen to the other, but don't have any grids outside, so drain will have to travel back to the soil pipe.
Had a guy quote me £800, for fitting cabinets (I will build them and remove old kitchen), plumbingas described and worktops as previous post.
He reckoned it would take 4 days, which I think is abit long. He did say fixed price, regardless of time, and if it takes less it's "a bonus for both of us", but any longer I don't get stung.....
Still waiting on other prices..0 -
OOh and also, is it ok by building regs to have the soil pipe for the sink go outside the house, and then back in again to go into the soil pipe?? SOunds daft, and I know, It could freeze up, but would be less hassle than channelling in the hollow walls. just a thought to save abit of cash....0

Totally lost about the soil pipe issue,LOL.
The rest, £800 is a fair price for that work if not a tad cheap. 4 days is fine, 1 day units, 1 day doors, pelmets, plinths, handles etc. 1 day for worktops and 1 day for the sink. I think he's playing it a bit safe, I reckon just over 3 days, but nothing wrong on the surface lawrie.
