but why should you even need one?
Because stuff wears out and breaks. I don't get them on electronic things with few moving parts, like computers, hi-fi's etc, or stuff that's cheap like microwaves. But if you're going to get something expensive that moves, then it is something to look for.
Again, it's a "get a quote and weigh it up" situation.
