Is car servicing really necessary ?

    But how do you know what lamps have been removed, permanantly disconnected, painted over or masked. (Just to be devil's advocate) :D
  • If you don't periodically change oil/filters and flush brake fluid/coolant, and also check the overall condition of the car, you're an idiot and shouldn't be on the road.

    If you don't think your car deserves regular services, at least consider the other road users who do.

    It doesn't matter as the law requires a certain amount of lights to be fitted dependent on the year of manufacture.

  • Defects like that are not always immediately obvious, and often not even covered on the service schedule. I wouldn't put faith in a garage to spot something like that.

    Actually a visual check of suspension components is covered on the manufacturers service schedules and there woudl have been obvious signs of corrosion or weld failure.
  • I don't know about the Laguna but on mine, a visual check does not suffice. The corrosion is hidden behind a layer of rust-proofing mastic and is not obvious unless the mastic is removed - which takes time and money.

    you need to submit papers fo MOT/Insurance/and Road Tax Renewal

    You seem to have missed the point somewhat.

    MOT *does* determine the roadworthiness of the car as defined by VOSA. However, there are *lots* of things it cannot tell you. An MOT is simply the bare minimum standard that all cars on the road must attain. Tests in other countries are more stringent, for example the German TUV.

    IMO also, money spent on servicing is recouped in later savings. For example, fuel efficiency (is greatly increased with good servicing), wear and tear on other parts, and also prevents you needing to buy another car later when your car ends up knackered after lack of servicing.

    Also I am unsure why you link to an old BBC news article which is merely about bad garages and little to do with car servicing. Pick a garage that does the job properly, if a friend can recommend one perhaps, and you should have none of those problems.

    Problem is, if you don't maintain it, it *will* break eventually, and could be expensive to repair. But I get the feeling you won't be converted anyway, hopefully a big repair bill or accident will convert you (not that I wish an accident on you, just saying it seems it would *need* something to happen to get your attention).

    I just had my MOT test and the tester commented that my car had been well looked after :A

    Of course it's necessary you dumb bint. How long do you think oil lasts for without getting contaminated and degrading? What do you think happens then to moving parts which are rotating up to 6000 times a minute? Do brake pads last indefinitely in your world? Do drive belts not become slack as they stretch with age? Does your vaccuum cleaner filters not block up and if they do, !!!!!! do you think filters that have thousands of times more volume of air passing through them do?

    How long do you think moving metal parts last without lubricants?

    Have you had a car fail an MOT or do they pass first time without any repairs required at all?
