for that amount i am sure you would have to give sufficient notice, sometimes they have spare cash but not always

...and you'd be well advised to take along 2 forms of ID.

Give a few days notice at least, bring along some ID and be prepared to answer any questions they may have about why you want the money etc to comply with rules and regs.

It may well be possible, depending on the size of your branch, for you to just walk in and grab the money, but if you don't want to be disappointed it's best to let them know ahead of time.
  • If its NatWest and the branch uses CHIP and PIN(so all of them with computers) then you will merely need your card and pin number to take the money out over the counter. There is a limit for secondary ID for withdrawals on CHIP and PIN which is £5000. This is specifically CASH at NatWest Branches which use CHIP and PIN devices.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009

I withdrew £8,500 from my Lloyds bank account in cash and had no problem at all and did not give them advance notice.

You were lucky that they had the money, and they must have known you not to ask for ID.:D

I went in to Lloyds TSB to withdraw £3000 from my account - all the cashier did was ask me to resign the withdrawal slip in front of her again and I had my cash.... Had never used that branch before as it was near my work, not the branch I opened the account in.

It was however a Friday lunchtime with a queue going out the door - and the cashiers did look quite flustered. Maybe that had an impact

please be careful if carrying that amount of money out of a bank. the guardian has published several recent cases where a person has been mugged immediately as they left - ?inside job or just the fact that the transaction was in a very public area x

Makes a change from being mugged INSIDE the bank ... ;)
Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.

It will depend on your usual banking habits, the particular bank, the size of the branch etc.

If you never make withdrawls/transfers/deposits of similar amounts then the bank will be alerted to an abnormal transaction. As a security measure they may deny/request proof of ID etc.
Some banks A&L, Abbey for example have £500 daily limits over the counter unless pre-arranged for a higher amount.
Some banks smaller branches hold smaller amounts of stock cash. Although £3K isn't a lot it may be a problem.
The simple way to avoid any problems is to pre-arrange with a simple phone call and carry a picture ID when going to collect.
