Scammers?

Hi all,

I had a phone call yesterday to my mobile, the number of the "company" was 01792306900.
A man introduced himself as Donovan, and said he was calling about my mobile phone insurance for my new phone, I told him I don't have phone insurance, to which he replied why not? I said I don't feel I need it, he yet again said why not? So I said I don't want to pay it cause I don't want it, he then said "is that because you can't afford it" How flipping rude!! I told him it was none of his business and put the phone down.
I then rang O2, asked if this was anything to with them, to which I was told that when I bought my phone, my details were sold to databases so anyone could call me and it's not O2's fault.

I then googled the phone number, and found a link to a site where people were saying that they were scammers, so has anyone else had this problem with this company? As when I tried to ring back, no-one answered?

I had a phone call today from a withheld number - the guy offered me insurance for "the mobile you bought from o2 on an 18 month contract, instore"

I bought a simplicity contract, online.........

If o2 has sold my number to some database I'm not happy to say the least.

O2 haven't sold or given individual people's numbers to anybody, but there are separate databases available with notes of when new number series were first allocated to use, and some of these chancers will just work through the list and ring the whole lot up.

This is why, apart from these insurance people mentioned, you sometimes get a call not long before the contract period is up, or on what some of them guess to be subsequent anniversaries, with some of them pretending to be from your network and fishing for your ID details which they don't actually know. Almost universally, if you ask the name of their company and then say you've never heard of it, they hang up straight away

Oh, well "louise" from O2 told me they sold my details...never mind

At least I didn't fall for it, but on the website I read where they were saying they had been scammed they said that this company read back their bank details to them when they had never given it to anyone except their mobile phone company? They were with Vodafone I think though

As a retailer, I get offered Data all the time, which has been sold to Various companies by the Networks.

There are different forms of Data available including Names, number, tariff and date out of contract.

In this age of miss selling I find it disgusting that the Networks make available YOUR details to anyone that pays.

You should all contact your Network and say that you do not want your information being made available and you also do not want to receive junk mail.

Three for instance has a section on their airtime agreement that we have to tick saying wether you want your details given to third parties.

The only problem is that when we connect the phone Via Three's Sprint system , there is not any tick boxes to complete and they also do not want us to send the agreement to them. They then will only speak to the customer.
  • My son was scammed a few weeks ago by a company who called him after he had bought a mobile from carphone warehouse with an O2 contract. They said O2 had sold them his number for insurance. He paid the scammers £45 by his switch card. Then the phone got damaged and we tried to get it replaced, we got through to the company okay 'Mitele from Rugby' they did send us a prepaid box to return the phone before a replacement would be issued. Something told me that it was not right and I paid extra at the post office to have it returned signed for delivery. The company tried to tell me that they were having trouble with the post office delivering the mail. The mobile was never lifted from the sorting office. It has now been returned to us. We reported the company to our bank and yesterday they have refunded the money to my son's account and told us he has been the victim of a fraud. I now am going to the car phone warehouse to try and get the phone repaired. My son has learnt a lesson and fortunately is only out of pocket for a broken phone. So beware of 'Mitele' 0844 800 7164 offering you insurance

  • Hi there,

I've received a call from Trading Standards asking I let everyone who's had dealings with Mitele (or Midlands Communication Solutions, as some may know it) to send an email to scambuster@centsa.org.uk or call 0121 704 8684 detailing your experiences. This is because it is investigating the company and any information you can give will be extremely helpful.

    Many thanks,

    Natasha
