Calling Freephone Numbers From a Mobile.

Unless you were on a Orange Contract,or it was included in your inclusive minutes(Some O2 Contracts),or it was regd helpline(Virgin).Mobile networks charge mobile users to call freephone numbers.

If you dont know a geographical alternative to the 0800 number this can be expensive.

However if you call 0200 222 0700 ( indirect dial through number, you are charged min call charge if you dont get through) it will connect you to the freephone number and you can call it out of your inclusive minutes.

The service is provided by predial but is not published on there website.

Note its seems to work from most networks apart from virgin/easymobile who dont recognise dialling code.

This post raises a number of interesting possibilities, and is a very good spot by PF.

The first is as he points out, that an 0800 number is not going to be in effect a premium rate number for those affected mobile callers.

The second is that Pre-dial.com give you access to a raft of international destinations (see website). The users above can enjoy these by this or other means, and so too can any landline user. Many landline users effectively have free offpeak calls to 020 numbers via the likes of Justdialsaver etc. Hence (really) free international calls.

A third delightful twist is that Pre-dial allow you to make 0845 calls via their service.

And a fourth: if you accumulate enough of their points (roughly four per minute on onward calls overseas or to UK landlines) you can 'spend' them on those ever-so-peskily expensive 0870 calls we all keep complaining about. You might even be able to use 18866 to call the number in peak times, though I'm not sure if their CLI works consistently enough to allow you to use up stored points.

I cant see the point of using this service from a landline because all calls to 0500/0800/0808 are free anyway (24/7. 365) Also most alternative carriers offer you a short code access eg 1899.Or am i missing something?

One thing i did think of was that if you are on a Orange Contract and they have started charging you to call a freephone number(Cheap Calls/Calling Card Service) and you dont have an alternative. You can bypass this by using this no.

I've now had a chance to test the other calls mentioned, and they don't work as per the other services on Pre-dial. Apologies for leading you up the garden path.

As you say, there's no advantage in using it for freefone numbers from a landline

0200 222 0700 is barred by T-Mobile (used to work OK)!

Good tip though for other networks with plenty of 'free' minutes eg 3.
