Barclays online applications

I was wondering if the Barclays Online Banking application system is a truly automated process, or if applications just get put in the backlog with paper forms. The way to tell would be if someone who has applied online for the CURRENT tax year could please report how long it took before the Tax Haven account number showed up in Online Banking.
To avoid money earning 0.1% in Barclays current account, you would apply online opening with £1, then once you can see the account number online top up to the maximum by cheque in branch. Has anyone done this? One poster commented that the system wouldn’t accept £1 as a valid amount and so had to change it to the maximum.

I applied yesterday for 2008/9 with £1 deposit for self and partner via joint account. Both returned confirming emails with my name on it, (they dont ask for a name) and if its anything like last year it will take at least 2 weeks to setup.
as my confidence is so low, also applied to A&L - whichever sets up first I will either not put money into A&L, or stop Barclays via the 14 days cancellation option.0 -
Thanks, oldfella. It's good to know that an account can be opened for £1. As your account is for the next tax year, it shouldn't show up online until around 7 April. But I share your low confidence that it may take a lot longer than that. There will probably a flood of online applications on 6 April (people who are reluctant to give Barclays the chance to sit on their money).0

I should set your alarm clock really early on the 6 April if you're going to do it online. Barclays website appears to be slow at the best of times, heaven help it when everyone's trying to open their 08/09 ISA's at the same time!0
