I use Astonish paste stuff for stubborn grubby bits. I have an orangey one that smells quite nice. It comes in a tub.

when I have my kitchen refitted (which is unfortunately a long time off), I'm planning to have the cupboard built to the ceiling then there won't be any tops to get mucky !0

You could try starclen - like stardrops but contains ammonia. Used neat with a metal scouring pad it worked really well on cleaning the burnt on grease from my oven door (although a lot of elbow grease was needed). Soda crystals are also good for cutting through grease.0

Have you tried Cillit bang? Apparently it's good stuff and it's come to my rescue nmany times!0

For really bad grease I use neat ammonia. It smells awful and chokes me, but it takes the grease off.0

Another vote for scouring powder - probably pick some up at Wilkinson. May wish to use gloves whilst using it.
