    Hi,
I have a nice cut glass decanter - a 'ship's decanter' which has a very wide base, so you can't get a bottle brush in properly and give it is good scrub. It has whitish marks inside, and swishing about with warm soapy water and a rinse did not shift them. It has to be done with care as it is proper chrystal cut glass, and I don't want to do anything to spoil it.

Any suggestions gratefully received - thanks in advance.
  • pop into the decanter a spoonfull of dry uncooked rice and the same amount of rock salt crystals, add a small wineglass of warm soapy water. Swish the mixture around. The rice and/or salt will provide just enough gentle abraision to clean the glass.
Empty the contents through a sieve (so as not to bung up the pipes with rice) Repeat as you need to.
    good luck

think i remember reading somewhere that you add dry rice to water and swirl and the rice acts like an abrasive-mild-on the inside.
cant remember if the water was to be hot or cold-i would guess at hot

Or add bicarb to the decanter and hot water. Brings all the impurities out.

Depends what the white marks are. If it's had water in it, it could be limescale, in whcih case use white vinegar. That also works a treat on normal glasses that have gone cloudy in the dishwasher.

The old butlers' trick for cleaning decanters was to swirl some water and coal dust, which is abrasive, around inside.

However, nowadays, there is one small problem with this.
