weve had our wharfedale 32" flat screen for about a year and yesterday we brought a new dvd and home cinema system.

the system works fine for dvds but we cannot get any sound out of it when watching normal tv through a freeview box.

all the leads areconnected.

any ideas?

cant find the user manual for the tv either.

Firstly, you need to explain how you have it connected currently, and also what dvd/speaker system it is, so its easier for people to help.

You will need a direct connection between your Freeview box and the new cinema system. Generally this will be a red & white pair of phono connections labelled 'audio or line out' on your Freeview box and the same connections labelled 'Aux or line in' on your new surround system. It's then a case of selecting Aux in on your new system. If this is not the case please can you tell mewhat connections you do have?

Hi all, thanks for your help on this.

I'm using the "standard" AV red/white leads and have them connected correctly, from the Audio out on the TV to Audio in on the Home cinema system, and select "AUX" as the sound source on the HCS... both user manuals say this is correct. I've tried 2 different sets of leads and still no joy.

In the manual for the HCS it says do NOT use scart connectors whilst using HDMI, which I haven't, could the fact that it's connected to the TV by HDMI make a difference?

Unfortunately we don't have Audio out on the freeview box either (cheap Sagem HDD PVR) so I'm inclined to think that there's not a lot we can do. Or the Audio out on the TV is knackered.

We do have Audio out on the freeview box, labelled "digital audio" but it only has one female connector hole, coloured black. AV leads fit this hole, so does anybody know of A) any available adapters, and B) will we still get stereo sound considering it's outputting via a single cable?

    Cheers again,

Double-check the inputs on your HCS - most have at least one digital audio input.

If it only has optical inputs, you can buy a coax to optical converter from Maplin.

Right there's a couple of things you can try. Firstly you have connected it up perfectly. There's no digital output on the Panasonic so that's a non-starter. On the tv menu is there any settings for enabling the line out phonos to work? Could a toggle between tv speakers and line out. This would be the first port of call. Secondly have you tried turning the tv's volume to minimum. Switching off the volume on the tv may enable the phono outs.

Right - sounds like you have HDMI connected to your TV and using the red and white phonos from that to your HCS?

If this is the case, your TV will only receive the audio from HDMI it will not reroute the audio through phonos to the HSC.

Your freeview box sounds like it has a 3.5mm port on the back that can either be used for optical (digital audio) or analogue (with a 3.5mm to RCA lead).

As your Panasonic surround system does not have a digital input, you will have to use the analogue phono input (AUX 1) as you are doing.

So basically to sum up you need a 3.5mm to RCA lead from your freeview to your HCS, and use HDMI for DVD use for just the video signal to your panel.
