My neighbours live on the first floor and their window cleaner uses a ladder without harness - they wouldn't get much work done in Glasgow tenements otherwise!

it is that time of year when you notice how dirty your windows are, isn't it? Mine are a nightmare, but being on the 2nd floor, and the windows are 6 foot tall, so I tend to just shut the blinds and ignore it ;)

Window cleaners are no longer allowed to clean off ladders unless they have a harness.

Never seen anyone using a harness on a ladder!

What about apartment blocks? I am in a converted mill and it is impossible for us to get access to clean the windows as not only are we about 20ft up but we wouldn't have access to gardens below to put ladders up.

Our windows are disgusting and i would love to clean them, just cant get access to do it without hanging out the window which is far to dangerous!
I learned about debt the hard way and the best way :)

AFAIAA tenants can only be required to clean the inside of the windows - a requirement to also do the outside has been deemed an unfair contract term.

The harnesses and ladders thing posted by Pickles is one of those marvellous urban HSE myths. Window cleaners should apparently look at using long pole systems or mobile platforms, clean the windows from inside if the design is appropriate to allow that, or just use a ladder safely.

I had the front of my house painted, I know the self-employed man who did that brought out scaffolding every morning and took it away with him every night. It used to take him about an hour a day to put it up/take it down.

The window cleaner who did next door's windows (I was always too tight to use him) used ladders for him and his "lad" and I assume the "lad" was employed although he'd have been self-employed.

This Govt do like to legislate against individuals trying to earn a simple living don't they!

No This is the difference between short duration work i.e. window cleaning or longer duration such as painting, The HSE even had a response for this myth a year ago
