LCD or Plasma????

Hi just looking for some advice. I'm looking to buy a 40inch TV for my living room, I'm wondering what is the best an LCD or a Plasma for Sky HD?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Advantages and disadvantages to both. In the end for most people it comes down to personal preference in the viewing so best advice really is to go and try some out/view them.

From what I've been told 42" and over then Plasma is better so for you I would guess an LCD.
I was in a Sony Centre last week looking at a 40" LCD (1080p Full HD) for £899 with 5 years warranty and the salesman said if I took it away there and then he would do it for £799.

I think you'll find Organic LED's are far more likely to be the future.

Some say SED is the future, though it's been longer in development than they expected, and has now hit legal problems...

But in terms of picture quality, it still has the potential to beat both LCD and Plasma.

So perhaps OLED is the future?

Be interesting to see the differences in image quality between OLED and SED. But thye both sound a lot better than LCD.

I'd say OLED as well but then I'm a bit biased (I've made organic transistors myself and worked with people who developed OLEDs).

Aren't Sony alreay selling smal OLED TV's in Japan? I'm sure I read they planned to at the end of last year.

Hopefully my CRT will hold out until large OLED TV's are available and reasonably affordable.

Yep, things are definitely progressing rapidy. I think Sony's TV has a 3mm thick display which in OLED terms is actually really large, loads of potential yet to develop rollable displays etc.

  • It's been suggested to me by someone "in the know" that plasma screens tend to have shorter life than LCD screens - perhaps as little as 4-5 years.

I cannot comment on the life of LCDs except that the one for my PC is nearly 6 years old and is going fine.
