New Sky+ box smells of old wee!

Sorry not to have put it more delicately - but we had Sky installed on Monday (using an offer picked up on MSE of course), but ever since there has been a stale urine type smell in the living room, which is strongest near to the sky+ box.

Could the Sky+ box be producing the smell?

The only other thought I had is that the smell might be coming from the substantial amount of filler/sealant used to fill the hole that was drilled through the wall, although that was done from the outside of the house and it is a cavity wall.

Now before anyone asks - we don't have pets, but we do have 3 kids although they were all at school when the Sky was installed and I first noticed the smell.

Any suggestions?

Our Sky+ box produced an odour for the first few weeks - not like stale pee though, more like that electrically type smell you get with (cheap!) new electrical equiptment...

Is it actually "new" or "reconditioned"? I'm just imagining why it could have been sent back for repair :rotfl:!

I once wee'd on my tv when I lived in a flat ages ago. I did it whilst drunk and have no memory of it. Strangely, that didn't smell and it still worked but it made a crackling sound. I realise this is of no use to you.

    Sorry.

No, but it made me chuckle though - so thanks for that. Can't help wondering just how on earth you managed to do that - best not to think about it though!

In answer to another question above - I jolly well hope that it was a new Sky+ box - it was installed by Sky and unpacked from a box as you would expect and it certainly looks new.

Maybe the 'old wee' bit is in my imagination, but it certainly seems to be emitting an unpleasant odour!

I'd give them a ring and see what they say. Maybe one of the components has fried or something...

Apparently I just got up out of bed and did it, my girlfriend said she was hitting me and shouting but I just said "Don't be stupid, why would I do that?" and then got back in bed, leaving her to clean it up. Good times!

Her the next day? Bad times!

I had a V+ box installed a few weeks ago and that had a similar smell to the one you're describing. It has since disappeared. Maybe it's a new electronics smell?

it could well be the sealant used where the wire comes through the wall, it can smell pretty weird while it's drying

maybe a combination of that & the new electrical smell???

I'm sure it'll settle down in a day or two :)
