Don't think I could go back to blankets/bedspreads/quilts again :( - all that messing about to properly 'make the bed' - even if only actually stripping it a couple of times a week. Think I fell in love with duvets the first time I shook one and threw it back on the bed - what could be simpler. Don't think I could even abide the weight of all those blankets now anyway. Have to admit that my home is very well insulated (double glazing, walls and loft) though we never have the c/h on in the bedrooms at all (unless grandkids are staying in the spare bedroom). I only used the full combination of duvets for a couple of days this winter and it proved way too warm for both of us so I went back to just the autumn weight one - but we DO use a Kingsize duvet on a double bed to get the extra length so no bare tootsies!!!!!

Duvets are much less trouble than sheets and blankets!

Fitted sheets and duvets for all of us here -and it means the kids can strip and remake their beds easy peasy.

    Really dilemma for me.

I really feel the cold, to a ridiculous extent. So at the moment it is two duvets for me, plus warm nightie.

I really really really really hate changing duvet covers.

But I really really really hate making beds.

The way I see it, struggling with the duvet cover once a week is better than making the beds every day.

But.... I love weight on me, like loads of blankets, as does DH, so it would make sense to grit my teeth, have the blankets and a make the beds.

And those microfibre ones look lovely and easy to wash.

    Hmmmm.
    Always another chapter

We always have a duvet and one quilted throw to sleep with (I'd have a flat sheet to snugle under too if I could, but hubs hates feeling hemmed in) ..I too like the feeling of the weight of the bedclothes I just can't sleep if I don't have that feeling, even if it's very hot.

I think the old way sounds fab though, and I definitely could go for that.

I would love an eiderdown, but just can't justify the expense.

I had a partner some 30 years ago who was against these newfangled duvets and insisted on us having proper sheets and blankets. I do remember though, that he changed his mind when he saw how expensive new wool blankets were (I woudn't know what they cost now), and of course you need at least 2. The project was aborted at that point!

I guess the microfibre ones would be a good alternative - but fortunately my current OH is not fussy, and duvets are soooo easy in use.

I'm afraid I just regard an eiderdown as a "too small duvet" that falls off! Easier to just have the full duvet and dispense with the sheets and blankets!

I only ever need a summer weight these days. DH has a winter weight and summer weight according to time of year. Went onto 2 singles when I got all hormonal and haven't gone back. I like my own bit that doesn't get nicked!

best of all is a double bed on your own!

  • If i had my way i'd have sheets, blankets and quilt on the bed, even in summer as i get so cold at night but OH wont hear of it

If i do put on a flat sheet and blankets all tucked in when its really cold he does all this over-dramatic kicking (looks like DD when she used to have paddys when she was about 2 ;) ) until its all untucked then flings them off. He sleeps in shorts and whinges because i wont put the heating on in the bedroom and its cold but wont entertain the thought that having a blanket as well as the quilt in winter would keep him warm

So we have a fitted sheet and a quilt and i have 2 blankets over me at my side of the bed - he can freeze lol :rotfl:

Im afraid its duvets here too, with sheets underneath and then an additional fleece underneath that if the weather is cold. We have no heating in our bedroom either which is horrible. I do have an old bedspread which is in the cupboard which i may use this year if it gets freezing at christmas again. Our house sucks for insulation - we had that double cavity wall insulation done but we have single glazed windows that bend when its windy!

Both our boys have a duvet each and a fleece blanket to go on top when the weather is cold with their pyjamas on too. Even the dog has a duvet in his bed to snuggle into!

Forgot to add - my boyfriend caught a bit of that last ngiht and said oh ' will that be on the on demand thing tomorrow?' i said i presume so cos its bbc2 - and then he said oh cos i wouldnt mind watching it! So SNAP i think i have a secret os bf too

http://www.towels.co.uk/blankets_throws.htm was the only place I could find selling wool blankets when I wanted some; not even John Lewis sold them! I got a couple of the King size blankets from towels.co.uk and they're really good quality.
  • We still have blankets & sheets, the blankets are merino wool, cost a fortune, but have so far lasted 23yrs!!!
Sheets are more of a problem, we can't find the heavy weight cotton ones any more, so its trial & error when we buy new ones. Most of our sheets are also 23 yrs old!!!!
Children all have fitted shets & duvets, mind you DD2 used to love our bed with all the weight of the blankets
