Trials & Tribulations of O2 and Sony Ericsson K850i

Hi guys,

I'm going to try and keep it as short as I can but it is a long story, so bear with me!

Been a customer with O2 for about 4-5 years. Renewed my 12 month contract in October 2007, chose the Sony Ericcson K850i. Since, there has been ENDLESS problems.

I have just requested my FIFTH replacement phone in under SIX months!
PHONE #1
- Intermittently the phone 'crashes' and then restarts and starts with a 'Searching' screen to relook for the network. This can happen at any time, even when the phone is not in use.
- Occassionally the phone crashes half way through a text message is being composed, and the only solution is to remove the battery to restart it.
- The camera's shutter does not open automatically when it is Powered On, at times switching the mode to Video Camera first and then going back to the Camera setting will open the shutter but most times it requires a restart to fix.
- There appears to be a problem sometimes with the memory/storing of items, such as Notes, when they are saved they are then not retrievable and are not stored in the phone's memory.
- Despite attempts to change the settings, recently the camera's flash seems to now overexpose all images taken.

PHONE #2
- The light/touch sensor panel at the top of the keypad, was intermittently reacting to touch but soon become completely inoperable.

PHONE #3
- The handset seems to have crashed and won't load up or power up correctly, despite attempts to connect it via USB or power charger. The phone's keypad lights up and the handset vibrates when switched on, but there is no functionality with the screen or phone function.

PHONE #4
- First attempt to power up the replacement phone issued by O2, and the handset fails to recognise my SIM card (which remains in a good condition and is recognised by other handsets in my house I have tested it on). Presumably ANOTHER fault with the handset.
This is becoming extremely frustrating, every time I replace the phone I have to make a trip to the Post Office, pay Next Day Recorded Delivery and have the inconvenience of using an old phone and losing all data that can't be backed up (e.g. text messages from the phones I use).

O2 won't allow me to change which handset I use, because I have a contract with this phone (the SE K850i) - my contract expires in October 2008 - but I'm not keen on the idea of having to continually replace my phone with refurbished handsets that continue to develop faults.

I have submitted a complaint with Sony Ericsson also, but they have only apologised and offered a similar service to O2 - in which they repair the handset with a refurbished one (no doubt, the same repairs centre!)

Any advice??

There are threads on the Forum relating to the same problem.

    Have a search through.

In the meantime it may be worth going to SonyEricssons website on your PC and downloading the Update Service to ensure you have the latest software.

Is it a 02 branded phone as it is more than likely to be the 02 software branding that is causing the problem.

Dealers are complaining in the trade Press about the poor reliability of handsets currently across all Manufacturers and are pushing for these issues to be resolved.

With SonyEricsson products I debrand and update them before I sell them to hopefully not cause my customers to be in the same position as you.

I find turning off 3g helps some phones to behave normally.

I was always a SE fan but in the past year I push other products.
