That is half the fun and no one can tell how old you really are with a helmet on :rotfl:"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Please may I ask: what is 'skating'? I understand the ski-ing bit but this is a new one to me! (sorry if it's been explained earlier - I couldn't find it).0

SK-ater is an acronym I thought of for people without children (and therefore can't be SKI-ers). It stands for Spending Kash And Totally Enjoying Results.:rotfl: :rotfl:(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Ah, I see! Thank you! I have noticed that with each year that passes my grown-up nieces and nephews take a ... how can I put it ... certain kind of interest in me. D'you know, I think I might manage to fit in a bit of skating this weekend.0

Go for it evelyn! I'm sure it's equally as enjoyable as SKI-ing!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Hi again everyone
Not been deserting you, but had a link to the old thread to tell me when you posted, and didn't think to put it on the new one - fixed now!
Lofts! - it's on our list for retirement - whenever we find the time! Garage is DH's pride and joy he has spent this week on it - we keep Freecycling now anything spare, had two collections today, saves us going to the dumpsite.
Re the Javea area, are you aware that if you are over 60 there are some very cheap rate hotels out of season? The food is on a self service basis at both places with full board including wine and water if you wish. The cost at the moment for the hotels is Benidorm 20.00€ and Javea 17.40€ per night for a minimum of 7 nights. If anyone wants any more info pm me and I will give telephone nos. One of the ladies from my Spanish class uses them.
As for making decisions, I agree with the overall assumption, but the way I look at it now is that we ask ourselves if we were not here and our DS fancied that would he get it, the answer is usually yes, so we anyway;) :rotfl:

All these stories just remind me how much junk I have stashed. Used to have a second hand shop 20 years ago, so anything I liked, I used to pack into boxes and forget about it ~ so not got a clue what half of it is.
We have a Merc Sprinter van which we rig out as a camper of sorts, and are planning on clearing off down to the South of France in about 3 weeks for a couple of months. My son lives in Marseille, and says its quite warm down there. Then we are going to carry on to Italy on to the Adriatic Coast ~ there is a small beach that we found, and you can park on it. Last time it got too hot, so had to head back north earlier than we intended. I would love to travel to Poland as well. That's where my father came from ~ he came over in the war, and never went back.
When we come back, I want to start a good clear out ~ start ebaying some stuff, as money is a bit too tight to throw it out. So that's my plan for the summer.
We were thinking of clearing off to Spain for 6 weeks or so over next winter.0 -
furndire, my dad was Polish too. Came over after the war because he couldn`t go back to Poland as it was too dangerous. Last time I went to Poland I was 15 (45 years ago) and it was 9 of us in a bedford van, which my dad converted. It was quite an adventure and my mum was driving at one point and we nearly went into Berlin. I still remember the fast about turn and seeing tanks in the distance0

Thanks Kittie. I bet that was a great holiday.
My dad was always worried about going back, (and my mother didn't encourage him) but never did, even though friends of his did. They once tracked down where his family was, and came back with a letter for him ~ way back in 1970s. He spent hours writing a letter back, but when he didn't get a reply he gave up. With hindsight, I wish that I had got him to teach me some Polish, as I still have the letter they sent to him, so if I'm brave enough, I may do a bit of searching for him.0 -
I have a friend in Germany who was moved with his family into East Germany when he was 12 after the war, and part of Germany was given to Poland. They managed to escape to the West in the Xmas truce in the 50's/60's and never went back. He has a real fear of travelling even now, he has been back to Poland once to see where he lived, but other than that stays in Germany. We hope to go and see him and his wife when we are in Belgium for the day. It is a very sad tale I was privileged to hear once, not one he tells very often.
