My MRI also said a protrusion which turned out to be a bulging disc which was pressing on nerves including the Sciatic Nerve, they tried physio, rest and meds but in the end they did a small surgery I think it was called a laminectomy which involved removing the protrusion .. took time to recover but it certainly helped with the pain but I do still have numbness in the smaller toes of my foot on the side I had the Sciatica... I hope all goes well for him and that you get to Amiens for your hols..

For the benefit of anyone with Sciatica, when I managed to master mine, I was left for a time with a "flapy" right foot.
ie it worked perfectly OK for pushing me forward when walking but then the other leg was doing the pushing and the right was just being put in front of me, it tended to "slap" down on the pavement.

It seems that is really is a case of "use it or lose it", when it comes to nerves. Even now I find I have to "remember" to walk properly, as it is not longer completely automatic.

Don't you just love the NHS. After being told last Thursday that DH needed 'urgent' spinal surgery we haven't heard a thing. The surgeon who is to do it was away yesterday as was his secretary. There are 2 people on the 'urgent admissions' list and a further case conference was to be held today to decided which of the 2 is to be admitted first as 'urgent'. Meanwhile, DH is out getting the car washed. You couldn't make it up, could you?

The latest news we have this morning came in a phone call from Admissions. The surgery will be done on 27th March. It's still 'urgent' but there are obviously different interpretations of the word 'urgent'. He's had everything done except for an ECG which has to be done on the 21st and then, be admitted early in the morning of the 27th for surgery that day. No problem there. It's far better than sitting in hospital from the previous day and worrying, a big waste of time, we did the same a year ago when he went for urology surgery. I dropped him off at the door and brought the car back, then he phoned me at 11 am from the ward to say 'all done'.

Those 6 soldiers - or what's left of them - are to be repatriated to RAF Brize Norton. Maybe tomorrow, no one seems very sure, I'm trying to find out because now we know DH won't be in hospital until a fortnight away we could go there together. I've said before, he's very comfortable in that driving seat because it supports his back. My granddaughter is hoping to go to one of the funerals. We just want to pay our respects.

We now know that DH has to go into the orthopaedic ward for midday on the 27th, nil by mouth from 8 am that day so presumably surgery that afternoon.

We've managed to rearrange the trip to Amiens, summer prices now but better than losing the whole cost of it. We've put it into mid-May. We're going to Carterton, Oxfordshire, next Tuesday afternoon, just to pay our respects. No longer Wootton Bassett.

We're not going to the repatriation this afternoon. Too difficult. Sure to be a lot of standing around waiting - standing around is what we can't do, especially DH.

He received a copy letter sent to his GP from the surgeon he saw in clinic - what's planned for next Tuesday's surgery is: T12/L1 decompression and discectomy plus stabilisation +/- fusion. Apparently all 5 of his lumbar vertebrae are badly worn and even the last of the thoracic vertebrae is involved. Amazing that. His back seems like that of a man who'd been doing heavy manual labour for many years - but he hasn't. Since the 1970s at least he's been in supervisory/management/sales jobs, not digging ditches or unloading containers!

Best wishes to him MC, I hope all goes to plan. I've never dug a ditch in my life, nor do I plan to, but I've some degeneration in my C5 and C6. Part of the natural ageing process unfortunately, and very common.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I think it must have been well on the way to this damage long before we ever met.

OK, blast from the past I know, but seeing how everybody has ailments of one sort or another, I hadn't the heart to say everybody at Digger Mansions is fit as fiddles. But get well soon.

To the subject of this thread; what were the first things that you enjoyed doing when you finally got down to some serious skiing.

Reason for asking is that we complete on sale of Digger Mansion 1 by end of month. We are already in the Digger Mansions retirement home, and apart from getting it as we want it, that's it.
