Just an optimistic update - I got a right mouthful of abuse when I had left her on the wrong side of the door before going up to change DS.

She is now sulking about the lack of heat in the radiator :p

Her eye is still manky looking, but I feel much better.

    Thanks, HelzBelz (love the name).

During the day I put the cat baskets up out of the reach of DS. Heaven help me if they do not go back down in front of the fire straight after his bedtime!!!! The last few weeks the fire has been on even though we have not needed it - I don't care, I think her old bones are feeling achy at the moment and she's worth it.

Currently I think she is enjoying the benefits of the spare bed - not too many stairs to get to, in the same room as the immersion heater, good chance of sun, low chance of disturbance - result! :D:D

Cats have such strong personalities. I know they are not human, but they can be really, really forceful when they have a preference.:D

I am so glad she is able to give me a hard time. It makes it seem so much better.

    Just 'talking'.

The eye still looks sore, but she is in reasonable form. She was doing everything she could to snaffle DS's ready brek this morning. She doesn't actually like ready brek, but everything in a bowl is custard, and she loves custard. You cannot convince her, however, that she won't eat the ready brek, except by letting her have a good snuffle round the bowl!

She also likes tomato soup. I've caught her red nosed before now.

The big thing for me in the vets is 'Is she suffering'. If she isn't, or isn't enough to affect her quality of life, then we have to look after her. I'm supposed to be meeting a friend in the afternoon - I think I will put her on a warning that things may be a bit iffy.

    Thank you for 'listening'.

She sounds fine! I thought my cat was bad when he helps me eat ice cream - he'll sit on my lap and grab an ice cream off me given a chance - but I think yours sounds worse :)

I hope the vet visit goes well tomorrow, and the vet gives her the all clear to carry on for a while yet. It's times like these that it makes me wonder why we have animals, they can be so heartbreaking. I'm sure they are put on this earth to cause us extra stress and worry!

    Thank you, tishywish.

She's a daft old bat when she wants to be. She will do anything for tomato soup - I've tried explaining carnivore to her but she just looks at like I've gone completely balmy trying to explain something to a cat. :D

DH decided he wanted to switch to butter, so I saw an offer on Lurpak and got that. When I switched to Anchor because of a better deal, the old girl decided that his buttery toast was finally worth stealing - and did. So there you have it - according to our taster, only Anchor butter is worth stealing

I do feel so much better. She seems to be managing. I suppose all along I have been worrying that she is suffering, and I would have to do the right, but hard, thing.

I really appreciate your posts - thank you. Now I'm calming down I can see how much posting on here helped. There are some really lovely people on MSE.

Hi Hev just catching up with you and your old girl.. does she have a name or did I miss it? Our old girl was called Lindy, we have another of 19yrs called Jade, they lived together from when they were introduced when Lindy was about 2 and for all those years they only tolerated each other and if one walked in the room the other would walk out... but when we had to put Lindy to sleep Jade would walk round the house yowling in every room we liked to think she was missing her housemate and now I sometimes find her down the garden sitting right where we buried Lindy under the cherry tree , she just sits there for ages as if holding a conversation....
I still miss Lindy after 20 odd years of her company and antics like the time she came home covered in blue paint , it took us hours to get her clean again...
Sounds like your old girl is still enjoying life and thats the main thing... you'll know when its time.... keep us updated...

    Thank you, tanith.

Our old girl is called Shadow, a name we picked before we got her. Our 'young' cat of 14 is called Smoke and our late and much missed tom was called Smudge.

When Smudge passed away both of our cats really missed him. Smoke was beside herself as he had been her playmate since she was a few weeks old - she was a very tiny rescue. We really had to coax her to take an interest in life again. To our surprise, Shadow was also inconsolable and clingy - she had barely tolerated the poor tom and had given him some severe wallops. Sometimes when she walks round yowling, I think she is missing Smudge. In fact, I think they both sometimes miss him, even though it is four years since we lost him. I miss him so much, and we did the right thing by him.

How on earth did you get the blue paint off Lindy?!!! You would have thought she would have had the sense to stay away something so strong smelling... No, we're talking cats here. I love it when a cat gets covered in something and then looks really offended, though ours have never managed paint  The time when Smoke got a marshmallow stuck on her claw and tried to be nonchalant as she shook it off - but it wouldn't come free...

    Cats are such wonderful companions.

Thank you for encouraging me to post - it is a real help.

We never knew where she got the paint from the vet said we were really lucky it was emulsion as if it had been gloss we might of lost her as it would of been impossible to remove ...
She just came walking nonchalantly into the kitchen one Saturday morning leaving little delicate BLUE paw prints across the floor .. looking at me as much as to say... oooh look someone made a mess!!!! Who me? No not me!!!

We rang the vet and he said as long as it was water based we could try and wash her... if not we could take her in and he would see what he could do... did you ever try bathing your cats ? Well in the end we just dunked her in and got scratched to pieces in the process , she yelled and scratched the whole time... there were a few patches we had to cut off with scissors and it took a few weeks to go completely but eventually she was beautifully black and white again... I would post a pic but I cannot work out how on the forum for some reason...

I have just been in the garden and Jade is lying at full stretch enjoying the sunshine... oh to be a cat in my next life :rotfl:
