I had problems the other day trying to install a newer version of nero.It wouldn't complete the install and it also wouldn't let me remove the pld version in "add and remove".Also I noticed that my shortcut icons for my cdrom and my cdwriter were missing.I presume the two things are connected although I'm probably wrong.I've been into "device manager" and they both have yellow exclamation marks on them.It says that windows cannot load the device drivers, they are either missing or corrupted (code 39).I tried following the on screen advice in troubleshoot but with no joy,it says it cannot find any newer drivers than I have.I resorted to a system restore on a friends suggestion, hoping that this would make them work again, but again no joy.It does seem to have sorted the nero problem(I can now open my older version) but this is not a lot of good without a working cd drive. Please can someone offer a solution,(in idiot proof form preferably please)

Strange....
Firstly, when you turn your p.c on does it identify your HDD's and CDROMs correctly?
Do you know if you are using cable select or master/slave jumper settings?
If your POST (bootup) screen doesnt show your CDROMS windows will never find them.
It could be lots of things, a channel on your IDE may be down.....or your IDE drivers may be corrupt for some strange reason.....

I think there is an option in Windows to 'Roll Back Driver' which does the reverse of Update Driver and restores the previous drivers that were installed but this would only work if your original (working) cd drivers had been replaced by corrupted ones. Alternatively you could 'Uninstall Driver' for your cd drives and pray that next time you boot-up Windows finds the correct drivers!0

HAD THE SAME PROBS AND GOT ANSWER HERE http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=82588&page=1&pp=10
(hope this helps as worked for me)It is not what you give your friend, but what you are willing to give him that determines the quality of friendship. -- Mary Dixon Thayer0 -

Yes T4i it shows the cdroms and hard drive when I turn on.I Think it says master/slave settings. When I click "my computer " though, it doesn't show them.I did manage to get my shortcut icons back briefly but they had red ??marks in them.0 -
Possibly driver conflict between your cd reader and writer. Try booting in safe mode to load a minimal set of drivers and see where that gets you.0

OK, well things cant be that bad then.
CDROMs use microsoft drivers and therefore shouldnt post a problem with driver conflicts etc etc.
If you goto device manager look for IDE/ATAPI controllers. Double click it and look for a Primary/Secondary channel. Do they both appear? Has the secondary channel got any error codes next to it?
Double click the secondary channel and look in advanced for transfer mode....PIO or UDMA.
Report back please.0 -
Did as you asked T4i, device driver lists my cdrom first and my cdwriter second.(just in case you needed to know) Results are;
Device 0................DMA if available
current transfer mode: multiword dma mode2
Device 1...............Pio only
current transfer mode : PIo mode0 -
Thats good. It looks like your IDE channel is picking up the correct transfer modes.
Next I'd try to repair ASPI. Depending on what operating system you use:-

Worth a try. Also, http://www.nero.com/eng/ASPI_Driver.html0 -
Played orainsear, looks like it will do the trick.
You can download the tools here......ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/cleanpack.zip
5. Why does the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive disappear after installing Nero?
This issue normally occurs if you have another CD recording software installed previously and installed Nero afterwards, or if you uninstalled the other CD recording software and then installed Nero.
To resolve it
1. Download the Driver-CleanTool and RegistryChecker.
2. Extract the zipped files onto your hard disk using WinZip or WinRAR.
You should now have two files: Driver-CleanTool.exe and RegistryChecker.exe.
3. First run Driver-CleanTool.exe by double-clicking it.
Driver-CleanTool deactivates drivers that caused problems in Nero.
4. Second run RegistryChecker.exe. It removes all links to drivers of earlier (removed or uninstalled) CD recording software.0
