    Hi
If you're using OpenOffice you should be able to open those docs and Excel spreadsheets OK.
    Have you tried?

You can open them in OpenOffice, unless they are saved in Office 2007 format, although there is probably a workround to do this now too.

Hi Lou I agree with both of above replies to you....

even if you edit/creat excel/calc doc in OO you can save it and edit/open it in OO Calc..what is it you exactly need?

Ohh, so OpenOffice is just as good as MS Office then? I just realised I can access the Word docs. I haven't used Excel yet so don't have any docs to look at. Someone sent me an Excel doc but it wouldn't open, so I thought I would have to get MS Office again.

In OpenOffice there is a spreadsheet, probably called 'calc'.
That's the one to use for viewing the Excel sheets.

I have OpenOffice Writer open, where would I find the spreadsheet option?

    Hi
Writer is the word processor program, similar to Word.
But in the Open Office menu there should be another option that says something like 'Open Office Spreadsheet', that's the one equivalent to Excel.

    I have found it, thanks.

Do you know why I couldn't open an Excel attachment sent to me though?

Also, do I not need MS Office if I have OpenOffice?

    Thanks.
