As I am not a business, a "less VAT" cashback deal is not a 100% for me.

Even if you were VAT registered, you would have to reduce your input VAT by the VAT element of the refunds. Quoting "ex VAT" rebates is just a scam way of paying out 17.5% less. Obviously, they are reducing their output VAT by the amount of the VAT on these rebates too.0
