Webhosting Website Problems Can Anyone Help?

I built my website a year ago. The whole thing cost $30 (OK around £15). This included the first two years domain name and a year for the hosting of the site. The latter included a hosting price of $10 for the year.
Without warning my hosts have suspended my site as the subscription date has passed. I was supposed to get an invoice and then another two reminders before they took any action. I had had no contact at all from them.
I have contacted THEM three times. Once by logging onto my account on line, once by e-mail and just now by phone and had to leave a message. Several hours has gone since my first contact. Still nothing.
I know $10 for a years worth of hosting was an offer (now closed) but the new price for this year is $55 or £37!
Can anyone
a) tell me if they know a cheaper web host company
b) is my experience typical?
I want my site back!!!!

I still haven't heard from my web host company! However, I have just contacted yours through their website and will let you know the outcome.
Thanks

Website hosting is a "commodity business". Anyone with a PC can start a web hosting business (you don't even need any servers as you can rent them online). The only way to make money is to have lots of customers, so some companies make silly offers that they can't keep. For what it's worth, I can recommend pair.com. When I was with them, I found that they replied within minutes to any query by email and were always helpful.
The golden rule with websites is to always have your domain name registered with a different company to your web host, so if the host mucks you around, at least your domain is safe and you can take it somewhere whether your host cooperates or not. My domain is with pairNic.com who I've had no problems with.Eh?? I give up!! Towel is getting thrown in here!

Thanks for your reply and advice.
Unfortunately I DID register my domain name with my web host but I have been able to transfer over. God knows what will happen when the domain name comes up for renewal next year since I STILL haven't had a response from my original web hosting company depiste three attempts. In the meantime I followed Bill's advice and was up and running again within 36 hours. I am just glad my site is not a commercial one or the delays would be costing money!!!!
Anyway I am sorted out now so thanks for the help.
