Transferring my mini ISA to a better account - advice needed

Hi
I currently have an instant access mini cash ISA with Nationwide paying a return of 5.05% AER according to their website. I have had this ISA for about 6 years but have never thought of transferring it to another bank/building society to get a better return on my money. I didnt even invest anything in it last financial year so consequently had to fill out a form to keep it open as well as paying some money into it this year.
I have seen lots of attractive offers but am looking for an instant access (incase i need to withdraw money), high interest account with preferably a high street name that i can transfer what is in my current ISa account to. I am alos looking to save on a more long term basis so would appreciate advice on good savings accounts too.
Really dont know what all these figures mean, what is AER? etc should i go for a fixed or variable rate?
PLEASE HELP ME!

Check Martin's best buy article. Nationwide do a 1 and 2 year fixed rate at 6.15%. Otherwise Lloyds do a 6.5% if you have £9k+.
Abbey and A&L both do 6.25% variable rates.
Regarding fixed or variable, depends on your situation and if you will need access to the money.
