The Tesco -avis Clubcard Scam

Options
its a con!
right i have a £30 tesco voucher
avis clubcard deal is 4 x tesco vouchers= so £30 x 4= £120 in avis tokens
u cannot redeem on the avis website instead have to call them.
so before ringing i get a quote online, came out as £180 for 7 days
great i thought, by the time i used up the tokens i will be paying £60 (£180-£120)
so i call and they quote me £220. i query this and avis say its higher rate for tesco clubcard deals.
basically the points are useless- by the time i redeemed the tokens i would end up paying the original full website price!
what a scam!- is this illegal??
defeats the purpose of joining the clubcard scheme!

Whilst I agree it seems bad consider this:

A lot of places offer discounts online which you cannot use in conjunction with any other offer.

The price you were quoted is the full price therefore, before any other offer.

If the figures you quoted above are correct:
The full original website price was £180
    The phone price £220

Once you take off your £120 vouchers you would pay £100
Thats a mighty £80 cheaper than the original full website price...not the same.

They do it with the Hotel ones too. You will (normally) not get any price except normal rack rate if you book a hotel using vouchers.

    Very Cheeky? Yes
    Scam? Not really, no

    * Spoke to a guy who works for a company that have pulled out of clubcard this year and he said that Tesco actually charge companies to be part of the scheme and then they only give them a small proportion of the value of the vouchers back? Now THATS cheeky!!*

we have actually found this with a lot of the hotel deals. you cant book what you want only what they will allow you to book. ie the most expensive room with meals included.

surely they realise that people doing deals are looking for a budget price not top of the range with extras.

    i too feel conned.

Lots of places don't offer online discount or other discounts when you use clubcard deals but providing you have earnt the deals cheaply enough you can't beat the clubcard scheme.

You can only redeem your vouchers for full-priced items. Not items reduced in the sales nor at Cheshire Oaks shop.

Just reposting this to give people a better idea of why companies may not be throwing bargains out left, right and centre.

Would you rather pay the full price, because thats the alternative.
I think a lot more companies will pull out TBH. My DH and I got our cars serviced FOC with tesco CC vouchers last year. Alas, not this year, they have pulled out (see comment above as to why!!)

I could have paid £150 for full service and MOT with no CC vouchers or £00 using £200 worth of CC vouchers...it's a no brainer....guess which I did?!

Be thankful for what you get.

Only way around this is to return a full price item for a credit voucher which you can use in the sales.

If you aren't comfortable with it don't do it, I haven't. I am perfectly happy to spend my tesco deals within the rules of the scheme, I was just pointing out a loop hole for those who aren't happy with the rules.

We used our vouchers at Cheshire Oaks for a repair of my wifes watch.

I have to agree with Morty_007. Last year i booked a Butlins holiday paid for by £30 cash and £960 CC vouchers. If i booked online i would have saved around £100, but would have had to pay £860. What would you do? £30 or £860 for the same holiday. Hard choice isnt it.
Yes its frustrating you cant get something for the online price when using the vouchers, but that often applies equally when ordering by phone/instore, online is still cheaper with some retailers.
At the end of the day CC vouchers are a perk of shopping in Tesco, when you use them on a deal you save money whatever the price. Its a little petty and narrow minded to throw your toys out of the pram because you cant get the online price. You are still saving money!
