I would love to get qualifications - either to update what I have or to get Admin qualifications. With Aspergers, admin could be a good area for me.
It's a case of funding. I need free tuition plus living expenses.
Job Centre have explained that I am too qualified for any government-funded training.
I don't feel qualified for anything sometimes! Actually, I could do a lot of jobs, but need NVQs which I don't have, and can't get - too old for an apprenticeship, can't afford other options. Customer Service, Retail, Admin.....
I don't drive so supply would need to be local and long-term. Tutoring doesn't bring in enough hours and is difficult without a car. Registeredith teaching agencies - got nothing. Even applied for Classroom Support work, the schools only want volunteers or qualified classroom support. My teaching qualifications don't count for classroom support. I've applied to every school in the area and got the same reply.
I know it seems I'm putting up blocks, but I'm just trying to show that I've tried EVERYTHING - and the government courses have agreed with this.0 -

For goodness sake, you really need to start taking responsibility for yourself here. What do other people do when they want a change of career?
You are coming across like the state owes you a living now.Gone ... or have I?0 -

I couldn't agree more. I've not seen someone put so many obstacles of their own creation in the way apart from those who intend to scrounge off the State for eternity.
If you really wanted a job, you'd take anything. If you really wanted to use your degrees, you'd get a job doing anything, use the money from that to take the NVQ you need and then apply. Hell, you even admit you HAVE been offered a job.
At the moment all you have is a few bits of paper and sod all work experience in anything which is why you're not getting interviews.
Get your head out of your backside and go sign up with an employment agency doing factory work if you're as desperate as you claim. It's guaranteed employment.0 -
Are you related to StudentPhil? I have to ask because your attitudes seem similar.
My husband's been a secondary school teacher for getting on for 25 years; he's just moving out of his subject into one-on-one support for immigrant kids to enable them to join in mainstream lessons (I forget what the technical name is). What qualification does he have for it? None really unless you count a part-time TESOL course from 20 years ago, but he makes up for it with his give-it-my-best-shot attitude.0 -

Says it all really, so you'd rather wait for your ideal job to land on you lap and claim benefits in the meantime rather than work in any job to actually support yourself.
Even if the job you have been offered isnt perfect, at least its experience. As you qualified 14 years ago and have only worked 1 year I dont think you are in a position to be choosy.0 -
I get the impression that you just want to sit back and do nothing except whinge. There are plenty of teachers out there who are not qualified to teach their various subjects, I should know because I used to makk homework for one when I was a student because he was having to teach French - a language that he couldn't speak BTW.
Why not undertake some voluntary work or any kind of work for that matter because that way you will have some recent experience to put on your CV. If you want a job try looking at http://www.jobs.ac.uk as they have all sorts of jobs listed in Universities and FE establishments. There are plenty of agencies out there who can get you back into work. Also instead of expecting the council to give you a house - why not ask them for housing benefit - you are entitled to this if you are on JSA.
I think you are concentrating too much on the negatives instead of thinking what you can actually offer someone. I also think you are being rather snobbish about your education as you appear to me to be belitting those unfortunate people who have lesser grade GCSEs and have received poorer education for whatever reason. Have you thought that your unwillingness to be flexible is causing a bar to your employment?
You ralk about training, if you are on JSA you can do any course at a local FE for free as long as it is no more than 15hrs per week. Of course, you would know all this if you visit your jobcentre regularly or even spend time on their website looking for a job - any job!
I think you are very fortunate - try adding a serious disability to the mix and see how easy it is to gain employment then! I have friends who are disabled like me and they used to earn £45K and have found themselves on JSA and are now applying for jobs in their local supermarkets as shelf stackers. If they can do it, why not you?0 -
if i needed the money and someone offered me a job i wasnt quallified to do i would take it simple as that, they obviously think your the person for the job, they think your quallies are appropriate, why have a downer on your self?0

So why not do this? I'm sure if it works out it will lead to something more permanent and give you back some self respect and perhaps make you realise that you can do it!0 -

My daughter has the same attitude and it drives me mad. She seems to think that because she has a string of A levels, she can somehow go straight into management. She also seems to think that 2 months of doing 4hrs a Saturday at Next counts as enough experience to be a manager and can't understand why less qualified people are getting jobs. Oh, and despite the fact I've been working longer than she's alive, apparently I'm wrong when I say that for many jobs experience is more important than bits of paper.
I have no idea what careers advisors are telling kids nowadays but they need to change it sharpish.0 -
On the last government course, for 13 weeks , I was asked what work I wanted. I stated, honestly, I would do anything. I DO apply for jobs. I do NOT place obstacles in my way. The job advisers can't see why I'm not getting work.
The problem with this new job is that I am not qualified for it. You wouldn't ask me to drive without a current licence. I am being asked to teach complex needs which I do not knbow how to do.
My only reference to people with lower qualifications than myself was in trying to explain the ability range of the group I am expected to teach. I did not belittle them as has been suggested. Nor am I snobbish about my qualifications.
I HAVE worked longer than a year! It's just a year that I was in schools, then moved into Adult education. I would take a job in a school if I could get one. I have applied.
I did voluntary work, but the Job Centre stopped it - I was told it meant I was not available for work. Even though I would have stopped the voluntary work immediately I got a job.
I'm seriously trying to get relevant work and thought this forum might be supportive. More fool me.0
