in Cutting tax
Hi people i used to work for myself a couple of years ago in the building game under the cis sceme my taxes where payed as i went along each week at 21% of what i earned.
well in the end the contract ended and bits and bobs of worked popped up but not enough to keep me ad my family going so i eneded up lossing my house while this happened i lost a lot of my belongings as i had no where to store anything including lose of paper work like my tax returns ect. Which were the last things on my mind at the time now i have payed my taxes but have not returns the form for tax returns and now according to the baliff inland revenue have taken me to court without me knowing for a sum of £1807.37 owing in taxes from 2004 i know i dont owe this now according to the baliff of swift credit services he said the courts had granted him the permission to remove goods of the value of the debt and decided to seize my car he filled out the paper work i never excepted the form nor did i sign anything. He has not taken the car as of yet but says he will be returning to collect the money or the car.
can he do this?????????
now i have spoken to inland revenue and they are sending me some details of payments i made ect of those years to help me fill in my tax returns but they say the baliff is a seprate firm and the case in there hands what they decided to do is up to them i need some help and advice what can the baliff actually do.

This isn't something I know much about, but whatever you do do not allow them into your home. If you do, they can pretty much do what they like with regards to seizing goods, and they can also come back in at any time they like, whether you like it or not. You will get people who know more than me on the Cutting Tax and Debt Free Wannabe boards.

You need to get the tax returns submitted. The amount owed is probably just the late filing penalties for not submitting the tax returns. This is a very common problem where people just assume that because tax has been paid under CIS or PAYE, they don't have to complete the tax returns. If yours is like many other cases, as soon as they have the tax returns, it'll transpire that you owe very little, if anything, and the problem will be solved. The reason you didn't know about the "debt" is probably that you didn't tell the HMRC when you moved house so they'll have been sending reminders and demands to your old address. The bailiffs will have been a bit more cunning to find out where you live now, hence it's all caught up with you.0
