I cook in a local pub - we get our steaks from a local butcher who sources the meat locally - everyone tells us the steaks are great. You should go to local places that source locally
ps And cook it properly!!0 -

We go to an independant pub come restaurant which does fantastic steaks, sourced by the chef from local butchers, in fact quite often see the chef in my butchers buying stuff.
The steaks are fantastic and cooked perfectly, in my restaurant eating experience, it is hard to find the perfect steak, however you order it, especially in large, busy chain restaurants.£2 Coin Savers Club (Christmas)- £86£1 Jar (Christmas)- £29Christmas Vouchers Saved: £1450 -
i wonder about walkabouts steaks. they are about 2 inches thick and in a circle like a burger. i find it odd!
lloyds steaks are good tho, i like their rump steaks0 -
Think the secret here is to avoid the big chains and seek out the smaller independant establishments.
What I can't believe is that people put up with this !!!! in such huge numbers.
I did mention to the staff what I thought of the food and while she was apologetic, she also said that they rarely get complaints or negative comments. Which quite frankly is astounding.0 -

You have to think of these cheepo pub grub places as McDonalds but with lager.
No real surprise that at a fiver a head the steak was not the best you'd ever tasted...."Love you Dave Brooker! x"

Some of the big chains use reasonable meat (vacuum-packed, not frozen by the way - look for the Brakes van), but just pop it out of the pack onto the grill - sticking it in a bit of oil and pepper for a few hours works wonders...
But yes, the "two for one group" gives you a bit of a clue - you're getting 6 quid's worth, not twelve quid's worth at half price.0 -

I've eaten "steak hachette", ie. horse, in France and you would know the difference. It is a very sweet meat and, IMHO, absolutely delicious.
I know people in the catering trade who only order fish when dining out, as it is the only thing that cannot be "mucked about" with.
My top two most memorable steaks to date (over and above the couple I've cooked and somehow managed to get the timing just right - it's all too easy to get it wrong) were at - if it's still there - an Australian restaurant halfway up Park Street in Bristol and, just last year, at "The Watering Hole" on Perranporth beach. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
My brother in law used to work for a major pub chain and he once brought home the 'menu' binder ftom one of their pubs - it was a set of glossy pics of how to cook the food and how to set it out on the plate. Nearly everything was microwave or boil in bag.
Actually, I don't mind Wetherspoons food - some of it is rubbish, but the salad and sandwiches are quite nice (that's not the chain he worked for btw)0
