If your in a virgin media area then they will install a phone line for free (I personally think virgin media are awful and expensive but you may get good service)
you may get a few pounds cheaper with another provider such as madasafish or the post office but personally its not worth going somewhere else to save a few pounds as you will have greater choice with call providers with BT.
Do not go with phone co-op service I had a terible experience with them before i went back to BT.0 -

Go for a BT line. You should be able to talk them into offering you the half price (£62.50) installation offer (see HERE - say you saw BT Notice 44/07 mentioned somewhere online). To get that, you have to agree to an 18 month contract but, provided you only agree to the Unlimited Weekend Plan (formerly known as BT Together Option 1), that's not really an issue because you can sign up for a CPS provider and/or use indirect access providers for your calls immediately.
See the 'HERE' link in my signature below.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

Don't know about madasafish but with the post office it is essentially a BT line you are getting. BT Openreach provide the engineer and fix you up to the BT exchange. If you do then need to go with BT for supplementary providers Post office don't tie you in to a contract so just give 14(I think) days notice and you can go to BT(with a contract). Here is a link to their terms and conditions

It says £110 to set up new line.0 -
To get phone service from Madasafish you need to take their Broadband Service.
On the BT half price connection offer you must make 10 chargeable calls or inclusive calls per month via BT.0 -

That is not so. Their phone service and broadband service are independent of each other. (And madasafish is now owned by BT anyway).
But in view of the cheaper cost involved with the BT half price offer, it would be false economy to use madasafish in any case.0 -

I forgot about that.billsavings wrote: »On the BT half price connection offer you must make 10 chargeable calls or inclusive calls per month via BT.
However, the free inclusive UK 01/02/03 calls of up to an hour each now included in the Unlimited Weekend Plan (formerly BT Together Option 1) count towards that and free Caller Display - so there's no real cost involved.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. My daughter is in the same position, just bought a new build. do you know if Talk Talk will put the line on for you, or have you got to bo go BT. I know my daughter will have to sing a 12 month contract with BT, but it works out more expensive for broadband etc.0

With the current £30 installation offer from bt, check the offer conditions and do the cost sums before getting anyone else to instal the phoneline.0

Talk Talk are not a phone network, and they don't employ engineers. They ride on the coat-tails of a BT line/service, so in the first instance BT will be the first step (or Virgin, in in a cabled area).0 -
            hiya,
im looking to change to bt (for my landline and internet)
sick to the back teeth of virgin
i rang to check at the begining of the week, they said i would need to pay the £125 fee (something about re-connecting our line at the exchange) does anyone know do i have to pay this amount in full first or could it be spreaded out? (like could they put it in with my dd`s)
thanks.0
