New tyres (black circle)
I got 2 new tyres (mid-range) last Jan after MOT picked them up on borderline and two tyres giving cautionary note due to wear on sidewalls, also tyre place picked up on this. I couldn't afford all 4 at time so now I can I thought I get some better tyres perhaps premium range. Most of my mileage is just round town, rarely any Motorways nearest one being 60 miles away anyhow
Is it worth getting good tyre? and I noticed there some Eco tyres suppose to save fuel, sounds like a load of bull to me
Tyres are 185/65 R14 86H
http://www.blackcircles.com/public/order?view=standard
I thought about trying blackcircle and get them fitted locally, and also thinking of asking about 2 new brake pads for front discs, also exhaust is starting to rattle, I suspect the rubber mounting has got loose.
I just got the cam belt changed yesterday yet more expense on Ford Focus

Some schools of thought say that you should always pay as much as you can afford for your tyres, they are the only thing between your car and the road....
Personally, with the kind of driving you are doing, I would go for a mid-range tyre such as Firestone..... eco tyres do have an effect on your fuel economy, but would be very hard to tell.... check before you have your tyres replaced, are they wearing evenly? If you are wearing front tyres on either inner or outer edges, this is going to reduce the life of your tyres considerably.0 -
Thanks I had the two tyres balanced and some sort of other thing done to them back in Jan, didnt realise it would add quiet a bit more to the bill
The tread on the rear tyres is fine seems even from what I can tell, but the walls are well rubbed one you can hardly read the tyre size.0 -
Is this the outer wall, and if so is it because someone habitually rubs the sidewalls against kerb edges? It could be that there's a way to avoid the problem recurring ...0

Sounds like you need your tracking checked.. The wear described is unacceptable and probably affects handling. The man without a signature.0

Yes, it is worth getting good tyres. People spend money upgrading brakes, suspension, lights etc, and then spend as little as possible on the bits that are actually in contact with the road.0

Well, a lot of people don't spend money upgrading any of the things you mention. And then spend as little as possible on the tyres.0

Been there before Poppy, Blackcircles are good, but you can do better by taking their quote to some local tyre places and in my experience they are aware of the Internet and will try to lower prices to the same level.
Now I did have the eco tyres (I think Michlen branded) and they made f*$%£ all for fuel economy on our Passat Diesel, it's much more how you drive and 1to2 % improvement (as quoted by some makers like Firestone) is very hard to notice.
I do think that cheap tyres at £25-£30 are really good value now days, they seems to last far longer than cheapos of yester year.
Got the Nankang brand on the 2 front corners of the Passat now for more than 2 years and still good (mixed 15k miles/year urban and countryside driving).:jFive exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

I paid less than £200 total for 4 new tyres fitted, balanced, VAT etc etc, so you can get easily get decent tyres for £40 per wheel total. None of the local places have managed to beat Blackcircles for me.Happy chappy0

Thanks for the replies the tyre walls were already rubbed when I got car, I may have added a little though.
Blackcircles seems good price I cant get much cheaper locally when I take into account the 5% code and 4% cashback.
I just want other work doing like the front brakes and possible exhaust as long as exhaust doesn't cost too much as I mentioned it is starting to get noisy like clanging I assume some mount has come off0 -
The rubber mount is £2, so have a look and if they look old, go and buy the (maybe) 3 and replace them, they just push on and off.
Brake pads are very easy to change, so if you buy a haynes from ebay or similar, you'd save the labour cost.0
