how much/often do you feed your cat

our cat is a rescue and she is a year old im feeding her twice a da half a pouch of wet mixed with some dry food morning and eveing, she is eating it all so am i feeding her enough or should she get more

Is she losing weight or putting weight on? Doe she go back to the empty bowls to look for more food or appear to cry for more food?
How active is she? Do you still have the notes from the rescue centre about how much and what type of food to give her?

Sorry for all the questions, but they may all have a bearing on whether what you are giving her is the right amount or not.

I would say that half a pouch of wet is a little on the light side even if mixed with dry, but that may be why my cat's looking a little porky!!

Our 6 have half a 390g tin each twice a day. We dollop 3 tins at a time into 6 bowls and leave them to fight it out. A 'visitor' polishes off any leftovers.

Difficult to tell from your post, as different cats eat different amounts and at different times of the day ...

If she's eating it all, then it's not too much.
If she's begging round your feet in the kitchen, then it's not enough.

My cats are fed twice a day, quarter of a can each per meal (one tin shared round 4 bowls per mealtime). But they also have dry biscuits & water available all day so that they can graze if they are peckish.

sorry yes i can see now it was a bit vague, she is not very active at the moment cause we have been told to keep her inside for six weeks although we do play with her a lot with the annoying toys on strings to get her runnning around and excersing she is soooo funny,
we have been giving her half a pouch of felix and royal canin biscuits which iswhat she was on in the rescue, the first few days to a week she wasnt touching much of it but im assuming that was because she was settling in but now she is finishing all of it the pouch is a 100g so she is getting 50g roughly plus a handful of biscuits mixed in.
she isnt crying for food only in the morning when i get up (foolishly i tell myself its because she wants to see me but i know its just for food) but if i have some toast or something in the living room she does like to try and get some of it
think i might give her the whole pouch and some biscuits mixed and see how she does,
just dont want to end up with a fat cat. and seeing as she isnt going outside at the moment and excersing properly.

So she's new to you? How lovely! Don't forget, if you have any queries, the Rescue Centre you got her from will always help you out with advice, with the added benefit that they actually have experience of your cat.
I understand the temptation to allow her to get you up in the mornings for food, but you really are making a rod for your own back in the future especially when you really need a lie in.
As Tigsterooie said, fresh water around is so important.

p.s. spending time playing with her is a great way to strengthen and reinforce the bond between you.

the kids to see to getting me up in the mornings no chance of a lay in. lol

when i am allowed to let her out should i have other bowels for her outside
as well as inside or will she know to come in for drink/food,

sorry im used to dogs and we recently lost our max but cause of different working hours now its not fair to get another dog so we got the cat instead as she will feely be able to come and go as she pleases (eventually)

I just fill up my cat's bowl when it is empty. Not sure if this is the right thing to do, so not actually sure how much I give her. I give her a combination of Coshida (from Lidl) and Iams (I mix the two together).

Should I be giving her wet food as well? I give her Sheba occasionally as she doesn't like Tesco own brand, but is there a wet food that I can start her off on that most cats like? Whiskas?

I have 5 cats an 3 of them are fed with one handful of dry food twice a day. The other 2 are a large breed and are fed on demand!
My biggest cat will sometimes eat a huge amount in one go, other days he just likes to keep "grazing" - so his bowl is topped up whenever he "asks". My grey tabby has a tiny stomach ( side-effect of a birth defect) and eats a mixture of wet and dry food 4-8 times a day. He won't eat enough dry food on it's own to keep his weight up but I have to hide any leftovers from the other 4!

I agree with some of the others.... I feed my cat 1 pouch morning and evening and always have a bowl of fresh water and bowl of biscuits so she can help herself.. I usually have to replenish the small bowl of biscuits every 2 or 3 days... I am fascinated as to how she manages the biscuits as she only has a couple of teeth left now.. mind she is 19 so I guess she's allowed to be gummy at her age..

ok heres the plan now form reading your all you rbits (thanks guys) im going to try her on a pouch of wet with a handful of dry mixed in the morning and evening and see how we go from there. x
