How to discourage cats?

I appreciate there isn't much you can do about cats coming into your garden, but there must be a way to stop them from tearing open bin bags, and messing on the grass?
I have two small children, and my neighbours own several cats who keep fouling on my garden. I am really getting to the end of my tether because it is preventing my children from being able to play in their own garden. I know you can buy products like 'Get Off' and 'Pepper Dust' but I also know they're not much good when it rains.
Just wondered if anyone out there had any other bright spark ideas because I am getting so fed up of it!
Thanks

Cutting up oranges and spreading them over the places they frequently soil can help - but a lot of it depends on the cat (mine will actually lick oranges and orange peel *sigh*)
As for ripping into bin bags - can't help you there. One of my cats is ex-feral, and we have to throw everything straight into our wheely bin - he can get through bags, open up pedal bins and flip top bins in seconds!"outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. inside of a dog, it's too dark to read" - Groucho Marx0 -
There is a plant you can buy that's meant to discourage cats.....don't know what it's called sorry, but I have to warn you that my neighbour planted it and one of my cats dug it up:D very embarrassing!
The other thing to do is to squirt them with a water pistol......no damage to the cats and it should put them off.....but you do have to be there!!!
Or get a cat of your own ( with a litter tray?) as then you shouldn't visitors?0 -
I will probably get shouted at nowfor being so mean! but I used to give my bin bags a quick spray over with flash with bleach when I put them out and never had a problem with cats tearing into them again, and if I put bones or food into the bag I would tie it up in a nappy sack first.
My nan swears by putting rubber snakes on the flower gardens to keep the cats off.Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person touse the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.:D0 -

I've tried putting bones etc into nappy sacks but they just tear the bag, and empty the nappy sack!
I note however, that they don't do it to their owners bin bags! :rolleyes:I won't suffer, be broken, get tired, or wasted

My Nanna always used to put neat Zoflora on her bin bags to keep rats and dogs away, might work for cats and you can buy it in Home and Bargain or Poundland so its cheap.0

Try Vitax Scent Off pellets.
7 cats is A LOT, have you spoken to your neighbour about it? She should volunteer to come round and clean up after them!0 -

Several, not seven lol.
And as for speaking to the neighbour about it, they're not the most friendly of people...I won't suffer, be broken, get tired, or wasted

Oh, I meant to say also with a spray of flash with bleach in it!;)
and agree don't do it to their own bags, thank god we got wheelie bins now:DGive a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach that person touse the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.:D0 -
A sonic scarer I have never looked back absolutely brilliant.

I got a 'Catwatch' one of these to and it definately works. We do have a cat but she is 100% indoor so it doesn't bother her but it stops the others pooping in my garden and killing the wildlife that i try to encourage0
