I will start by saying that I have no ida what I am talking about so please be gentle.
We pay Sky (BT line) for *up to* 16 meg BB (
)
My little oofa-doofa tells me the speed right now is 54Mbps (
)
How close is this to what I *can* get and how can I optimise my connections in order to get the best out of it.
If that makes sense then thanks in advance

the 54mbps is between you and your router.
The up to 16mbps is between the router and the internet.
To find out the speed you're connected to the internet at, log into the router's control panel and check the sync speed.They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -

How do I do that

If you are not the technical your best option would be to go to http://www.speedtest.net and do a speed test from there. It's easier than trying to find the correct page on your broadband router.0

Sky says up to 16M and you are getting just over 3M. Looks pretty crap to me.Is this crap then?
But it may not be all Skys fault. There are quite a few things that could be causing it.
Distance from the exchange, state of the cable from the exchange, your internal wiring (including extensions, sky box, filters etc.), whether you have a decent and short lead from phone socket to your router and preferably plugged into the master socket. One other thing, it could just be Sky are crap...:D0 -

The exchange is 10 yards max from my front door :rolleyes:
Im in a three floor house, router and master socket are on the top floor. Laptop either ground or middle and xbox (which is the main problem) on the ground.
Extensions on both floors for sky TV, both have filters.
Is it sky or BT that are crap
Anything I can do to maximise the speed?
Thanks again

I'm on Sky and get:

Which is a bit slow for mine. A more representative result from my line is:
So Sky isn't always rubbish.
But as djohn2002uk says, there are so many other factors that can affect the maximum that you can get.

Try here to get your line stats from your router - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm , up/down sync (connection speed), snr margin and attenuation can give a clue as to where the problem might be.
If you are on the Sky Max product then you would be connected to Sky/Easynet equipment at the exchange, not a lot to blame BT for in this case.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -

Well you don't say what package you are on, upto 8 meg?, if so then shocking figures. Your ping time of 646 ms is also extremely poor so you got problems somewhere. Try and post your linestats as linked to above.
