Sneaky ways to save the pennies

I always have a stash of breadcrumbs in the freezer because I hate throwing away crusts, but I don't tend to eat breadcrumbed fried food very often, so I wasn't really sure what I was saving them for! However, for once the OH surprised me with a frugal recipe of his own! It's a modified cassoulet, just brown off some decent sausages with with onions and carrots; add a tin of cannelini beans (or even baked beans in sauce if you're being really frugal!) and a tin of tomatoes (I whizz them in the blender first). Add a big handful of breadcrumbs and stir them in. Simmer on a medium heat for 20 minutes, then stir in another handful of crumbs - they should get absorbed into the sauce and make it really thick and hearty. Serve with salad.
I use the breadcrumbs mixed with grated cheese to make a savoury crumble topping which I put on the likes of macaroni cheese, shepherds pie or anything that I think the kids might be fussy about eating. if I add a bit more grated cheese on top and brown it under the grill, it's a guaranteed success.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -

Just thought I would mentioned as I have only just discovered this myself after having the chest freezer for about 3 years:rolleyes:
Do check your fridge/freezer temps.
I defrosted my chest freezer. The temp knob was about just over half. Didn't think anything about it. But noticed the thermometer was off the scale. So have cut back the temp knob by at least a quarter and the thermometer is still off the scale.
I did it a bit at the time and then leaving the freezer for a few hours before going back and checking.
So you might want to check just to make sure that you are not keeping things too cold and racking the pennies on the old electric bill.

You know that sawdusty stuff that you get at the bottom of cereal packets....well when I'm getting to the lat portion of cereal, I sieve the dusty stuff out and use it in the next batch of Twinks
You also get dusty stuff at the bottom of dog and cat bix, this is sifted and given to the birds0 -

I've just been talking to my daughter on the phone and she told me about an OS thing.
She was watching breakfast tv this morning and there was a feature on people reducing their household bills. There was a woman on who grew her own fruit and veg and then produced a box of snails from the fridge. I thought my daughter was going to say that this woman cooked and ate them, but no, she uses the slime on her face as a wrinkle cream!!!! Yeeragh, yeeragh and double yeeragh  . I told my OH expecting him to express disgust as he doesn't like creepy crawlies and makes a big fuss abut spiders, but he said oh yes Gok Wan had some face creams on that had snail slime in them.
I post it here in case anyone wants to use it, but it is DEFINITELY NOT one for me.0 -

When my kids were small whenever we went out I always took a flannel moistened with plain water and rung out, then put in a small plastic bag to keep it damp and away from other things and used this to wipe dirty faces.
No cost at all.
I used to do this when the twins were babies ... and used old thin cut up towels as wipes too -ideal for bums :j as id wipe dirty botties with a bit of tissue first then clean up with small damp towel ... they all got bunged in the washer at the end of the day with the terry nappies and the other washing!!
never had smelly clothes/nappies even on a 30 washwading through the treacle of life!
