Hi, I chopped a bar of soap up into small pieces (some grate theirs) put into a large stock pan (needs to be able to hold 5 litres really), added in 1½ litres boiling water and simmered until soap had melted, then added in another 3 litres of boiling water.
Let it cool a little then added in 250g soda crystals (laundry aisle) and stirred until these had disolved, then poured into a container which holds 5 litres.

It sets a bit like blancmange I put 100ml of gloop into a jug with 100ml hot water so it is disolved then add to the drum of the machine.

It has washed everything fine at the moment including muddy football gear.

    Hope this helps

Now comes the hard question. Strawberry tangerine or vitamin E gloop? What do you think?

I did some home baking yesterday afternoon. Today DD asked if she could take some cookies to her uni mates as they do not all live at home. She said with exams some do not even get time to cook. (some live in shared houses).I thought that was very kind.
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
    Spring begins on 21st March.

Don't like strawberries myself and don't think DS would appreciate walking into work smelling of them, he uses that chocolate shower gel etc...hasn't told me the results but then what son would? :D

Tangerine sounds good but beware it doesn't attract wasps :rotfl:

If those are your choices I'd go for the Vit E. My own preference is Mr A's antibacterial...with a 19 y/o who has smelly feet I can confirm it works great!
  • Not sure if this has been put on this board before but here goes. If you have silver or sterling silver jewellery which is tarnished and have run out of bicarb to clean it, try toothpaste! Just use a tiny amount and work into the jewellery into a lather then rinse. For very tarnished pieces get a soft bristle tooth brush and gently scrub.

I'm intrigued by this Gloop recipe but as I've previous suffered from a clogged up soap drawer in my washing machine and now use a "ball" with Liquid Ariel (which is very expensive), I may need to try making a downsized recipe for a small quantity first to see how it works. Does anybody know whether, if you put a small quantity of blancmange textured gloop into a "ball" it would dissolve properly during the wash at a temperature of 30 or 40 degrees?

I remember my mother making up some kind of Gloop to do her washing during the war when I was a child and soap was rationed, but I can't recall her putting in any soda crystals. I think it was just gloopy grated carbolic soap dissolved in water which was kept in a huge jar on the kitchen window sill. A a spoonfull was taken out as needed and dissolved in the washing bowl. (No washing machines in those days !)

i would go for strawberry!!! Dh wouldnt notice anyway!!!!!!! :p

Well, i did a coloured wash with the gloop and no white streaks and i have done a towel wash and everything has come out clean. The only problem is that as i made it so thick it is very difficult to get out of the milk container I put it in!!!!

Primrose - I dilute mine in hot water before putting it in the drum. as mine is so thick i use 50ml with 150ml of hot water and mix it until it has disolved then pour it in the drum as i dont have a ball thing.

I am so pleased with it, i dont think i will ever buy washing powder again!!!! :D

Catching up (again) with the posts took me back in time to when saving the pennies had to happen in my childhood. I remember the kettle being boiled on the open fire because there was no shilling for the gas meter, soup made every 2 days from the vegetables from the garden, Tuesdays eagerly awaited because it was Familly Allowance day and there was 8 shillings (40p) to be collected at the Post Office to see us through till Friday when my Mother got her wages.

Anyone who sneers at us making cutbacks to avoid reverting back to those times have never experienced hard times in their early lives. I hope their children never will either. Keep on doing what you're all doing - it's the right road, maybe not the easiest one but one with a true purpose.

Edited to say that I had a happy childhood but was always aware that money wasn't easy to come by.

If the laundry is more of the 'freshen-up' than actually dirty variety, I don't use anything other than the power of the machine sloshing it all around & any residue detergent that loosens. I saw it first mentioned by Liz Earle--think she's something to do with the cosmetics industry-- as one of her children has eczema. If I do use liquid--my waste pipe goes uphill for some strange reason so blockages are too frequent if I use powder --I never use the amount it says. For one thing a quarter seems enough & I pre-treat any heavy stains first, & if I use any more we're walking about looking like we've itching powder down our backs!

I clean the machine by running it empty on the hottest setting, but add a bit of disinfectant & handful of soda crystals. A domestic appliance engineer said it was far more effective than the commercially available stuff, which is basically a brand name for said soda anyway! Which reminds me, it's about due for a clean..

As for the streaks, I turn all dark clothing inside out before putting it in the machine. Likewise thicker items, particularly fleece sweaters etc, as they seem to dry quicker that way tho goodness knows why confused-smiley-011.gif
I sometimes do this as well BMF, as you say some things just need a freshen up rather than an actual clean.
    My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
    So we’re empty nesters.
    Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
