Thanks for the tip about using the ice cooler packer for quickly cooling down packaged foods before putting in fridge/freezer.

At the moment, with the freezing outdoor temperatures and a full fridge, I'm just storing stuff in my large insulated picnic carrier outside the kitchen door and using it as an extension to the fridge.

There's no heating in our kitchen and with a full fridge, I've found that veg left in a fabric bag on the kitchen floor has kept fresh for a good couple of weeks!

When I bought some wine for christmas, I popped a couple of bottles in a bucket of water outside to keep cool. Well, with the weather being so cold, the water froze up and the bottles got stuck! It's starting to defrost now although there is still a layer of ice around the neck of the bottles, so as soon as I can get them out, I'll be bringing them in.

If you're using a lot of batteries, especially for kids things. It's worth investing in a battery charger and rechargables.

normally i would agree with you but over the last decade i just cannot for some reason seem to find any decent rechargable batteries!

for years and years when i was just out of high school i used rechargeables for my walkman headset as we were allowed to have them at work and those worked for hours on end np. but i've just had no luck at all with them since

i make sure to do the initial 12 or 16 hour charge as instructed and use them til they are run down completely but i find even with less power hungry items they seem to run out far too quickly, about half as long as i remember and it's ridiculous because sometimes you can't even play a game for an hour before the damn things run down (usually at a crucial moment!)

i'm doing a course on the environment now and hope to be doing a sustainable development or environmental science degree course next year so i would love to know of specific brands and info on rechargeables that DO last well. i'm not put off by the inital outlay, with the wiimotes being used so much and other items (still haven't found a decent docking station recharger either, grrrr) i know it's worth it, it would also asuage my guilt as we are so good about eco friendly elsewhere but now i have a stack of spent batteries i need to find a proper place to recycle them at...

anyway, if you know of good reliable long lasting rechargebles please do tell!

my ex mil did this at christmas time for all the drinks bottles. it was the first christmas we could open the fridge without having to be ready to catch everything that would fly out from it being overstuffed :rotfl:

    Inventory of Lightbulbs and Batteries

I've posted this on a different thread before, however, was reminded of it this morning when needing one.

That reminds me - I must have stockpiled about 60 100W lightbulbs (I hate the new ones, they are so bl00dy dim grr) so that I will hopefully never run out!! :rotfl:

This morning I decided to empty some bins upstairs containing paper, tissues cottom wool etc... I burnt it in the fire grate. Needs must with the bin men not comming out because of the snow for 2 wks. It did throw off some heat into the house so double job.

My mum burns lots of stuff in her stove and on the open fire, saves on buying a shredder too LOL.
