Hmmm, an interesting question. Presumably, you're following somebody that hasn't done this at the pump. This means you're getting their dregs, plus your dregs.

If nobody did it, then things would work out fairly - i.e. you'd get the previous persons dregs and leave yours for the next chap.

However, by doing this, you're messing with the system. The person after you will get less petrol than 'normal', unless they also do this trick. Even if they do the trick, they will only be 'evens', while you are 'ahead'. If they don't do the trick they get less that they paid for - they have to pay to fill the hose (now empty) and then they'll leave it full of fuel for the next person.

I'm not sure where I stand on this one. You're effectively getting fuel you didn't pay for and potentially screwing over the next customer.

I guess it's a matter of personal consience

    Dear God, how anal, :rotfl:
I drive an MX5 which has the petrol filler on the top of the car so in order to fill the tank the petrol nozzle has to be completely vertical. Quite often before you even pull the trigger on the handle you get a good glug of petrol out of the nozzle, then of course when you're finished, the nozzle is upright so every last bit comes out.
    :D WIN!
Just because you are offended, doesn't mean you are right

The freezer in the house is on it's last legs, and we've planned not to replace it as it's in the way and stopping us from building a false wall with a door in it under our stairs.. So we plan instead to use out chest freezer only down in the shed and bring out a few days worht of meat at a time.

I was wondering though - if I defrost some of the meat in my fridge (to save traipsing to the shed too many times in the week in the dark after work) will that reduce the running costs of my fridge?

    She certainly wasn't :D

You *can* get special stands for automatic watches - you strap the watch to it and it rotates to make sure the watch stays *charged*.

Mine seems to be just fine overnight - but if I leave it off for a few days (e.g. a long weekend or a holiday) it does need resetting.

That's a lovely watch face Mags!

I'm going to see if I can sell a watch of mine that I *think* is worth a few bob. (I say try.. I have small wrists and was given it without the 'extra' links that were taken out ) I might treat myself to one of those types of watches if I do :)

Talk to your pharmacist more often!

Many expensive UK brand named medicines have cheaper alternatives with the same active ingredients. eg

Benylin Chesty Cough linctus contains guaifenesin and levomenthol. Your pharmacist will stock their own brand of this medicine with the same main ingredient at half the price of Benylin.

Sudofed decongestant contains Phenylephrine hydrochloride and can be treated similarly.

Alternatively ask your pharmacist for free medicines. Some people on low incomes can register with their pharmacist and receive free medicines like paracetamol under the Minor Ailments Scheme. Once you're registered you just go to the pharmacist, describe your symptoms and you'll be given an appropriate medication. It depends where you live but my service is detailed below:

    http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2006/06/26102829/1

In my area you can get free medication for all of these ailments:

    acne
    athlete's foot
    back ache
    cold sores
    constipation
    cough
    diarrhoea
    ear ache
    eczema and allergies
    haemorrhoids (piles)
    hay fever
    headache
    head lice
    indigestion
    mouth ulcers
    nasal congestion
    pain
    period pain
    thrush
    sore throat
    threadworms
    warts and verrucae

Also, check out the £1 shop for varios medications that are licenced for general sale. Don't pay £2.50 for 12 Nurofen tablets when you can get 36 for £1!

Yep. It helps keep the fridge cool. I always do it now.

Surely the ultimate winner is the garage owner, it would be the first customer who would 'miss out'. From the initial first customer (from the very first sale from a newly fitted pump) the garage owners will be 'in credit' by the amount left in the pipe at the end of service. After that first sale, everybody only gets what's been pumped out of the underground storage tank per sale Not a huge amount, even given that most garages have upwards of 4 different pumps depending on the size of the garage.

considering the fuel is cut off at the nozzel, THE LEVER YOU SQUEEZE OPENS THE VALVE AND DESPENSES THE FUEL there is no way to get the fuel out the pipe without paying for it!!

i always laugh when i see people lifting the pipes up to TRY and get extra fuel!!!

its like saying have a pint in the pub but get the beer put the pipes?? the nozzel is the CUT OFF POINT!!
2015.......I aim to have a tidy de cluttered house by Xmas :)

Don't throw away your old washing up brushes. I keep mine under the sink. One I use for burnt saucepans etc and then once clean I use the new one. Another washing up brush I use for cleaning flowerpots, shoe soles etc. (mine has a different colour so that I can distinguish between them). This way your new washing up brush lasts much longer - I think I only buy 1 or 2 per year.
No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. Pot 1 to 4 = £261. Pot 5=£23
    Boots points:£39.21. Extra money in 2012:£674.59. In 2013 £603.48. 2014: £85. 2015: £0 :j

Phew!! This thread was certainly a read and a half but thanks to everyone for all their great tips.

Like everyone, I've turned down the thermostat on my central heating (combi boiler) a few notches but I've also turned down the temperature of the hot water too so I must be saving a few pennies from not having to heat the water up so high.

Also, after an awful lot of playing around with the water temp I can now run a bath just the way I like it (hard luck to the rest of the household) without having to add any cold water in. Seems a bit silly paying to heat water up only to add cold to cool it down.
  • Cut up old bits of soap in to small pieces and put them into a dispenser. Add some water and shake occasionally. Turns into liquid soap.
