things like draft excluders and those brush thingies in your letter box will all help too. No point in having the former in my house, I will be the only one that ever puts it in place!

Take two draught excluders and a piece of material of an equal length but about 4" wide. Join the two d/e's together using the material and slip the material under the draughty door........voila! As you open and close the door, the d/e's are dragged back and forth with it.

It worked for us and is good for anyone who finds bending difficult too.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
  • I find that DH's tree saw is good for logs. It has the right type of teeth, apparently.

Don't forget that when you trim a hedge or cut a bush down to save all the twigs for kindling.

I shall need that Hack Saw or Axe wont I.

Not a hack saw, they are mean for sawing metal.

What you need is a bow saw, like this

What a fab and simple idea, thank you!

Is there any point in getting thermal lining for the ready made curtains I have? I guess it would help to bulk them up a bit, especially in the bedrooms.

We have got flimsy voile panels in the front room, I am seriously considering making up a winter pair of curtains - we have got blinds that we pull down, but there is a little gap in the window seals that creates a draft - I know, will get the man of the house onto it :o
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

If you haven't made curtains before, you might find this site helpful http://www.alternative-windows.com/curtainindex.htm especially for measuring and estimating fabric. Always remember that if the fabric is patterned, the larger the pattern - the more fabric you'll need - if you want the pattern to match in the middle when the curtains are drawn at night.

Good luck with it - I got a great sense of achievement when I made my first pair of heavy lined curtains .

Gosh so much advice and help, thankyou all. I think that I will start soaking my torn up junk mail in a bin I have in the kitchen, and try filling the loo rolls and then maybe some of the smaller food boxes etc. I am looking on ebay and freecycle to see if I can get a logmaker. (DS and or BF will just have to help me out).
I hadnt thought about the twigs etc for kindling. Will need to think of a place I can put them to dry out? perhaps the landlords shed that he said i can put my stuff in. I did start to tidy it up a bit to get my things in. There is a crudely build breeze block area with a wooden lid, and divided. Thought that would do for coal and logs, but now I realise I am going to need a lot more then will store in there. Perhaps the kindling could go in there. There is a builders big plastic mixing tub in there with some old bits, I will ask the landlord if I can use that for the coal. Or to store my "paper logs".
now I am going to have a look at some of these links, especially the prepareing for winter.
    Thanks everyone.

Right, looked at Dunelm, thankyou. Did try to do an order, but got booted off the internet. A regular happening on my internet.
Looked at the kind of Saw I need. Perhaps will look at the car boot sales and of course Free cycle before I go and buy anything. See if BF has one that he could bring with him to use maybe?
I am going to try again to look at some of the other threads.
Re the draught excluders under the doors, thats not quite so easy on most of my doors as there are steps under at least two of them! And no space above them for a curtain pole! mmmm cottages.

Thermal linings would make a huge difference, you'd save masses of heat from escaping through the windows.
