How to tell you're truly an OSer!

Hi All,

I've been picking up tips from the OS board for a while now, but never really classed myself as a true OSer.

However, I've just got back from a Saturday afternoon trip to the shops. It's been ages since I treated myself so I got myself some bargain clothes, then nipped into Wilkinsons for a couple of bits. I was drawn to the cleaning products aisle and lo and behold - there was the Stardrops! I simply couldn't resist getting my first bottle!

Now, on getting home, did I dash upstairs to try on my new clothes? Nope, I mixed up a batch of Stardrops and cleaned the kitchen!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

(And yes, it is as good as people say!)

Thank you to all you OSers for all the tips!

I don't think I can be a true OSer then. Never tried Stardrops. Don't have a breadmaker or slow cooker either :D

Glad you're enjoying the tips here Creamcheese ;)

I guess OS means different things to everyone. I have a bottle of stardrops, but it's not my first choice - I hate having to rinse it all off! (So, yes, I'm lazy!) Have spent a couple of hours rereading your wartime rations thread, Thriftlady - now what you were doing must count as OS! However, there is such a wealth of experience and good tips on this board that whatever one's personal take on "OS" there's plenty to choose from. I never stop being grateful for all the ideas on here.

    Think twice before spending anything!

I've yet to try stardrops as I can't seem to find it in our local supermarkets.Means a 20 mile trip to get some and with car parking and petrol that could make it a bit too expensive. I'll hang on till I've got other stuff I'm after then it'll be worth while.
Never had a slow cooker or bread maker...........slow cooker was offered on freecycle but when OH went and collected it - well it was meant for one person and would hardly hold enough for that really.
As he's in charge of all things cooking related he sticks to chucking stuff in a casserole on a low heat. Bread making I havent done since there was a strike in the 1960's and I made it all by hand.........one loaf every day !! Hard work but lovely bread. Have thought about getting a bread maker since the price of bread has soared up but its not on priority list.
Still OH does tend to cook meals from scratch, always fresh veg, we use white vinegar a lot for cleaning and have for years bought second hand everything (apart from undies........lol)and we grow fair bit of veg in containers - So that makes us OS I think........

There was me being soooo proud of myself and you're all way ahead!

I've got a breadmaker but don't often use it. I don't have a slow cooker but that's because I think it would drive my dog mad to smell slowly cooking food all day and I'd come home to a very empty slow cooker!

So many OS things I've read about you all doing that I still don't do yet, BUT getting there - an OS step at a time !

Got a bread maker (on my third - 1st was an ebay bargain to find out if I liked it enough to use, second had to return to Argos as faulty) and use it fairly regularly - kids just LOVE HM pizza and garlic bread every Saturday night (family TV night). Also now a major activity when my two nephews visit ('can we make our own pizzas, pleeeaaaase !'). Least I know what's in it. Vowed to use the BM to make jam during the next blackberrying season...... !

Just bought a sprouter kit (using £10 off paypal code OH got sent from ebay) and first batch on the windowledge now. Will report back, but looks good so far. DD2 impressed, anyway !

Started off the tomatoes / courgettes / bedding plants etc from seed in the second hand greenhouse we got a year or two ago - fabulous, love it. Feel like part of the cast of The Good Life (old enough to have loved watching that !). Would love chickens but not sure about housing regulations / neighbours etc - still mulling that one over !

Use Stardrops occasionally - nursing my last bottle as Tesco seem to have stopped stocking it - must have a little word with Mr T...... !

Just got a book of wartime recipes from the Library yesterday. Saw it and it reminded me of Thriftlady's fabulous thread, PLUS the kids are doing WW1 and WW2 in History at school, so want to make them think about what food shortages / rationing really meant. Will try some recipes out on them under the heading of research for school work, and keep quiet about how much money it'll save us....... at least until they admit they like it !

Love this forum - please keep it up ! Life would be that little bit duller without a regular fix of the OS forums !

    Cheers

Well you can spot the people doing the grocery challenge as they are the ones stalking the shop assistant who looks like they are doing the 'whoopsies' :rotfl: (that sounds so wrong!)

You know you're a true OSer when you go shopping with someone and come back completely empty handed thinking 'well I can just fix what I have' 'Oh I'll make some of those instead of buying them' 'sure I can magic something up using what is in'

:o tight as a kippers wotsit
One day I might be more organised...........

    Lol...... and that's watertight !

This is so me these days. I see what my sister-in-law & family spend on designer clothes and am just horrified.
So nice to be able to give my lifestyle a 'cool' label like 'recycling' and 'green' instead of 'tight git' like might well have been suggested before....... !:rotfl:
