So I'm a newbie lurker to this board but think it is amazing. I think the big thing I have picked up and put into practice is...
:heart2: Lentils are our friends...

Shaz: when you made the tomato relish - did you use tinned tomatoes like Rhonda Jean did? And if you did, then did you weigh them drained or just use 2 1/2 x 400g tins? Hope you don't mind me asking.
Thanks!

Good morning all! What a lot to catch up on! I was only gone for a day!
So.... With sadness the challenge ends.
We have rolled over the 19p! to the new next challenge.:T :money:
I'm going to start a post later. But thought I should first summarise how it's been.
3 months, 2 adults, healthily, for £40 a month. And we did it!!!!!!!
Mr Weezl has lost some weight, but he feels good in himself, and I'm working on increasing his cake intake;) . He averages 3500 calories a day, so I'm not sure what to boost it to!?
I'm about the same as I was. Possibly an extra grey hair with all the plotting, planning and batch freezing!
If we were on a programme like 'supersizers' we would perhaps go and have a full medical, so you could see how we are at all levels, but this is the budget version, so you'll have to take our word for it, and ISOM can report whether we've started to look a bit manky!!
I've learnt a huge amount.
Nutritionally of course, but also practically, the huge differences in budget that shopping around, batch cooking, foraging, freeganism, bulk buys etc can all make.:j
I've learnt some things about me too, and about the world.
When I was at school, the part of me that we've jokingly referred to as the 'geeky' part, was understandably not such fun for my classmates, and rather than not have pals, I suppressed it quite a lot.
I guess I never really expected to find friends who wouldn't just laugh fondly at my inner geek, tolerating it while enjoying other parts. But no! I genuinely feel like people have actively befriended the inner geek! How delightful!:T
I also thought from reading around old threads that people might join in to say 'this can't be healthy!' or it can't be done on this budget. But in fact, I have had nothing but warmth and support.:A
we have been a varied bunch, but it has not stopped a lovely community forming. I have grown accustomed to your ways- no really I have!
so it feels sad to end this thread and begin another. In a way I wish I didn't have to, but I think it'll give an opportunity to give it a more accessible title!
I love bigmummas 'whittling ways...' and will have it as a subtitle, but I thought a rather more straightforward 'eat for 50p a day- healthily? Weezl's next adventure...' Might entice a few more readers!!!
Bails!!!!!! Welcome back hon, I missed you;)
Yategirl, please do let me know details of the Bristol forage, Me and Mr W would love to come.
Love to you all,
Weezl x

Wish I could press the thanks button more than once.
You have inspired me to get to grips with my grocery bill, not a job for the faint hearted. But thank you so much. You have really opened my eyes - I will be watching the new thread with avid interest.

(And what about making the nutritional stuff a sticky? Or that book...)Always another chapter0 -

Just to let you know how much we've all come to enjoy and rely on this thread... I've been waiting with baited breath for this post from you to know what was going to happen next cos I'm not ready for this adventure to end!
Right new thread, I saw your shopping list from the other day, will you have a menuplan to show how you are going to use this food?
55p? a day, if anyone else suggested that I wouldn't believe them but where you are concerned, anything is possible.
I'm with you every step of the way0 -
I've lurked through this thread and have read with amazement at all you've achieved. It's inspiring stuff.
I looked at our food spending for last month and it works out at about £70 a week for 2 adults and 4 hungry children, including a veg box weekly. I thought this was ok, but the challenge is on for me to get closer to your targets, bearing in mind, somethings the children just will not eat, although they do surprise me on occasion!!
I'm looking forward to your new challenge.:j0 -
hi our Weezl
Well - I've got me own little mental title for your next thread:D - so I shall be thinking of it as "Weezls cheap chips" or summat like that;) .
Freeganism eh? (as you might say) - have you been out doing a bit of that foraging in Sainsburys bins me dear (well - you coulda made it Marks and Spencers ones and invited me along:rotfl: :rotfl: ) - says ceridwen (who thinks it would be a bit of a lark to have a go at that).
Well...we will all be looking with interest to see what you come up with next.
Now..what was that phrase of yours a bit back "The geek shall rule the world" or "inherit the earth" or summat like that?!:cool:0 -
In terms of bumping up Mr W's calories whilst staying on budget ...have you considered falafels or even the humble lentil or bean burger? Not unlike making lentil pate but even thicker. Form into patties, chill and fry. If you bulk bought sunflower oil, it wouldn't be much more expensive.
I like to eat small ones with pasta and tomato sauce (i.e. like meatballs) or with potato wedges and salad or in baps with cheese (i.e. like beef burgers).0 -
I have recently started 'lurking' so hope you post link to your new thread on here. Will be waiting with baited breath ! Well done & thankyou !Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0
